Chapter 30 - The huntress is mine
Jace POV I stood outside a window and peered into the darkened room. My huntress was fast asleep. Max still had my blood in her system, and because of this, I could find her wherever she went. But I doubt I’d have that ability for much longer. I could feel her slipping away each day as my blood slowly disappeared from her body. I wanted to haul her back to my house, but I knew she’d never forgive me for doing that. Max seemed to value her freedom, so watching from afar would be enough for now. God. I looked like a fucking stalker. I rubbed my face viciously and stretched the skin under my eyes. Max was making me go crazy without her. I should have known better than to leave her as I did. I should have told her the truth and why she needed to stay with me. But, just like her, I didn’t like people telling me what I needed to do. I didn’t like not having control, and I certainly didn’t enjoy having someone calling my bullshit to my face. Only Lukas had the nerve to do it, and I secr

Chapter 31 - Captured
That morning, I had awakened from a steamy dream about Jace. To my surprise, my panties were wet, and I was ashamed to have had such thoughts of him—he was a vampire, after all. I was still mad about the entire ordeal, and my already confused emotions had become magnified. I felt raw, like layers of my skin were being removed from my body, exposing my weakened state. I hated feeling that way—vulnerable. I didn’t know what I felt toward Jace, and I was afraid to admit that he had grown on me in the brief time we had been together. It was like my brain was in a fog, muddling everything that used to make sense. I shook my head as I gripped the steering wheel of my car and turned on Hawthorn’s street. Lukas picked me up early, and we returned to his house so I could get my beloved popsicle-blue VW Beetle. Since my plan was to get caught by Noctua, we had agreed that it was no use hiding and that I should go about my everyday routine. It had been hard to explain to Moe and Bea the reaso

Chapter 32 - I lost her
Lukas POV I looked at my watch again, and only two minutes had passed since I had last checked. It appeared time had stopped, and I hated every second of every minute of my wait. I also hated Max’s plan, but I had agreed to let her do it her own way. I just hoped she knew what she was getting herself into or how to get herself out. I wanted the hunch she had about the detective to be false, so she’d simply come back down after having paid the man what she owed him for the services of the hacker we had gone to see. But as time grew longer, my hopes shrunk. Max could be correct and currently in some sort of danger, and I would have no way of knowing until it was too late. “Damn it, Max.” I sighed and raked my fingers through my tousled hair. I backed away irritatingly, leaning my body on the side of my bike, and continued watching the door to the stairs from afar. I placed a hand in my pocket and touched Max's inherited jewels. She had left them with me in case things escalated. She

Chapter 33 - Family reunion
I heard a faint whistling sound, like when you hit your skull so hard and hear a high-pitch ringing inside your ears. The muscles in my body ached and made me want to scream, but I couldn’t move since I was gagged. I kept still, listening to my surroundings to understand where I was and who was with me. I could hear two people talking hushedly a little further away. I decided it was best to pretend I was still out and maybe listen to their conversation. While I waited for them to say something worth wild, I tested the rope over my wrists and frowned when I couldn’t loosen it. Whoever had done the knot had done a commendable job, which slightly annoyed me. My feet were also bound at the ankles on each chair leg. Fuck. Was this all necessary? It seemed excessive for just a little old me. I continued working on the ropes and stopped when I heard the two men approaching. They didn’t talk about anything of interest to me, but as they came nearer, their subject changed. “Bet you twen

Chapter 34 - I need to get out of here!
I froze. I inspected the picture again, and I felt the familiarity become surreal. I looked just like the woman in the photograph. The old man, Michel, stepped forward and extended his arm.“Give me the gun. There’s no need for that anymore.”I almost gave it to him, but I suddenly remembered how I was brought here like a criminal or an unstable person who needed to be sedated and strapped down to not hurt others or themselves.I lifted the weapon and looked the man straight in the eyes.“Then why all the secrecy and team of men to drag me here? Wouldn’t it have been easier to just tell me the truth first? Didn’t I deserve that?”Michel scoffed.“Did my daughter deserve to be snatched from her family and forced to serve a vampire? To become his pet and…” Michel swallowed hard, forcing his bile down. “Mate with him? Of course not, but it happened anyway.”He closed his eyes as though he was in agony, and when he opened them, his emotions disappeared, and a blank expression surfaced on

Chapter 35 - The wolf's mark
I was lying on a seat and enjoyed the vibrating sensation of movement. My head was light like I was in a dream, but my body was feverish, so I fumbled my fingers over my clothes to remove them. I slowly stripped, pushing down my pants and doing my best to clear my vest so I could cool off. “What are you doing?” A deep, baritone voice asked. I opened my eyes and smiled when I saw Lukas peering at me through the front-rear mirror. If Lukas was in my dream, it was one I never wanted to wake from. “I’m hot,” I mewled as I continued to undress. Lukas stepped on the brakes and stopped the car on the side of the road. He exited and opened the back passenger door to put my clothes back on. When he touched my arm, a bolt of electricity shot between us, and he quickly removed his hand and looked at it with a perplexed expression. “What the…” “I’m burning up,” I repeated, tugging at my T-shirt. I let it fall on the car floor and watched Lukas’s expression rapidly change. I was wearing the

Chapter 36 - Lexie
Dust moats floated in the streaming light that filled the room. I quickly sat up, not recognizing my surroundings. I was in a small double bed with a flowery quilt over me. A floral tapestry covered the entire walls, and some old-fashioned cushions were neatly placed everywhere in the room. I wondered if an old lady lived here. Where the fuck was I? I saw my backpack lying close to the door. I jumped out of bed and looked to see if anything was missing. I dragged my gaze down to look at myself and noticed I was just wearing a T-shirt and underwear. The shirt was too big to have been mine, so I figured it must have been Lukas’s, and it smelled just like him. I blushed, wondering if he had undressed me. I thought I had dreamed of Lukas driving me somewhere, but I couldn’t quite remember whether it was real. My head was still muddled by whatever Noctua had used to sedate me before I could escape. I fished out a sports bra and slid it under my T-shirt, and slapped a pair of skinny je

Chapter 37 - Unwanted attention
The following morning, Lexie promised me a day of shopping. I tried to talk her out of it, but it was hard saying no to her. The next thing I knew, I was in a shopping centre, and Lexie was pulling my hand at a beauty salon and spa entrance.A lady greeted us, and Lexie wasted no time telling them what she wanted. I hadn’t understood what she had asked, as I was too busy ogling at girls getting their hair or makeup done. How much did this place cost?“Have you ever had a mani and pedi?” Lexie asked, lifting my hands and inspecting my fingernails.I shook my head. I never thought it was necessary. I kept my nails short because it was more practical for chasing skips and punching people at Sal’s gym. I didn’t want broken nails to be an issue, and I never thought I was feminine enough for that….“Don’t worry. I’ve got you covered. You’re going to love getting pampered. I used to do this with Julie all the time.” She added with a sad smile.“Have you really not gone out since her death?”“

Chapter 38 - Things are unraveling fast
Jace POV I waited in the conference room alone. I was the first to arrive at another impromptu meeting called by the president. It seemed urgent, and I wondered what it would be about. Everything related to the missing information sold to Noctua… and Max. A hostess entered the room and quickly presented me with a glass of blood, which I refused. With the previous days' events, I found my appetite had disappeared. There was only one person I craved for, and Lukas made damn sure I wouldn’t know where she was. Max no longer had my blood in her system to make matters worse, which meant I couldn’t find her. I just hoped Lukas knew what he was doing and that she was far enough away while he and I took care of things here. Lukas was following up on the person who put Max into the children’s home while I looked for more information about Edward Ravenwood and his wife. The doors to the conference room opened, and Director Ventura walked in. His eyes narrowed at seeing me, and he smirked ju

Chapter 39 - What do you wear to meet an Alpha and Luna?
I sat on Lexie’s front porch, looking out at the forest. I loved it. I would wake in the morning or come out at night, grab my coffee, sit there, and watch the sunrise or sunset behind the tall trees of the thick forest surrounding her home.I pulled on the soft fleece blanket I threw over my shoulders before coming outside, looked at the sky, and listened to the bird. The countryside was growing on me. Lexie told me she bought the house shortly after her mate’s death. I understood why. It was a place where you could find yourself again. I guessed that was why she had no television or internet in her house. She didn’t want the noise from the outside world and simply wanted to be in the present moment. The front door opened, and Lexie walked over and sat beside me on the porch swing. She roped her arms around me and leaned her head on my shoulder.“You look nervous.” She whispered.I fidgeted my fingers against the blanket and pulled on it tighter.“I’m not good with people, so meetin
