Chapter Twenty
Kiera looked back and forth between the two of them. She couldn't believe what was happening. Where did the sudden hostility between them come from? She blinked and tried to speak but no words came out. She was in absolute shock. "Kiera," Kane said after a moment, "take it away."She peeled her eyes from Mikael and asked, "W-what?" "The silver," he said, "take it away."She did as she was told without overthinking it. She carried the tray back to the kitchen and then stood near the counter for a few beats without turning around. Frankly, she was afraid of what she might see when she looked over her shoulder. Her hands were shaking and she was out of breath. She looked at the chocolate mousse and wondered what the hell had happened. She couldn't wrap her head around it. Kiera heard movement behind her and when she turned around, she saw that they were once again seated but they weren't saying anything to each other. She was afraid of approaching them but she knew she couldn't hide

Chapter Twenty-One
Kiera woke up with a heavy heart. The world was dark to her. She felt so heavy that it was almost as if she would never be able to rise from the bed again. She turned on her side and stared at the wall of her bedroom for what felt like hours. She didn't feel like doing anything. She had no interest in going downstairs for breakfast and working was the farthest thing from her mind. Besides, Simone and Kane were down there and she wasn't ready to face them. Kiera still didn't know what to make of the dinner. She wasn't sure if she believed Kane but she was hurt nonetheless. Her mind was a mess. Would Mikael have said that about her? That she was easy to please? That translated to being desperate and it wasn't how she meant to portray herself. But what if she had done so unintentionally? She groaned into her pillow. Thinking about Mikael wasn't healthy but she didn't know what else to do or how to avoid it. Going downstairs to distract herself wasn't an option. Doing work was imposs

Chapter Twenty-Two
Kane was in the living room when Kiera arrived. She spent the entire day with Mikael and so she was in an excellent mood. The whole incident at dinner was miraculously forgotten and she was relieved that he wasn't the person she had begun to think he was. It was all Kane's fault. He was the one who told her lies. She almost broke off all ties with a perfectly good man because Kane decided that he wasn't good enough for her. She wanted to confront him. When she stopped by the door to close it, she gave herself a few seconds to think things through even though it wasn't enough time. She gave up on the idea because confronting him meant that she would have to reveal to them that she had met up with Mikael. It would be best if she kept that a secret for the time being. "Hey," he said, searching her face with his eyes. "Hi," she said, stopping in front of him. She saw that Simone wasn't in the kitchen. Had she gone to bed? "How was lunch?" "Great," she said, remembering that she had

Chapter Twenty-Three
Jared put his hands in the air. "I thought you'd be more excited to see me, Ki."Kiera frowned and took a step back automatically. It was alarming to her how normal he was acting. It was almost as if he wasn't aware that they had broken up and had forgotten about the thing that happened in her kitchen when he came looking for her. "Are you out of your mind?" "Why would I be out of my mind?" he asked. She wanted to say more but decided against it. She sighed and turned on her heel. Having that conversation with him was not something she was looking forward to. She heard him following her and sped up. He called her name, "Kiera, wait!""Go away, Jared!" He caught up with her and grabbed her arm. She struggled against him but managed to free herself. "What are you doing? Why are you acting like this?" Her voice was loud and she didn't care if passersby would listen to their argument. He was beyond caring. She didn't know where all her anger was coming from but she was thankful for it

Chapter Twenty-Four
Friday arrived.Kiera was excited yet wary. She hadn't gotten the incident with Jared out of her head and the more she thought about it, the more sinister it all appeared in her mind's eye. It was the way he just swooped in to rescue her as if people happened to always be around when they were needed, especially in a city as big as theirs, and the way Jared looked afterward. She couldn't get his stunned expression out of her head. She was ridiculous for caring about someone who had hurt her purposely and relentlessly but she couldn't help herself. Sure, it could be that Mikael was truly around. It was a huge coincidence, her lucky day, just like the night they met. That was the only reasonable explanation, after all. Anything outside of that would be too bizarre to consider. Jared hadn't tried to contact her and she sincerely hoped that he wouldn't. If the police stopped by her house to question her about the incident, she would deny it all. She hadn't told a soul about it and she p

Chapter Twenty-Five
Celia approached her and kissed her cheeks just like she had in the bakery. She said, "It's so good to meet you, darling. I'm Celia, Mikael's sister."Kiera looked at him in surprise. Suddenly, she didn't quite know what to say. She had told Mikael about meeting her but she didn't say a name. How would she tell him now that the woman she called strange and 'scary' was his sister? Her cheeks flushed and she looked back at Celia. If she mentioned that they had met before, it would be much easier for her. But Celia kept looking at her in a way that, quite frankly, suggested that they had never met before. She didn't know what her game was but she had to get through this first stage successfully. "It's a pleasure to meet you," she said. "You're beautiful. Absolutely stunning." Celia fluffed her hair. "Thank you for the compliment. Coming from a woman as gorgeous as you, it's sincerely flattering!" Kiera smiled but it felt strained. Mikael was watching her intently and she'd give anythi

Chapter Twenty-Six
"So, Kiera," Caroline began after the table had been cleared. "Tell us more about yourself. We're all very curious. You're all Mikael seems to talk about lately."Kiera blushed and stole a glance at him. She couldn't say that the question didn't catch her off guard, especially since it was the only thing any of them had asked her. Throughout dinner, nothing was said directly to her, and so she simply listened and savored her meal. She didn't like talking about herself and the fact that they were all watching her intently made her even more uncomfortable. There was nothing remarkable about her life that she felt like sharing with these strangers. She cleared her throat to speak nonetheless. "Well, I work as an editor for an emerging publishing house. We publish speculative fiction and—""I meant about yourself," Caroline interrupted "Not about your career."She heard a chuckle and gulped. "My career is a big part of my life and so it's all I have to share with you. I don't think you wa

Chapter Twenty-Seven
Kiera sat on the unmade bed and waited. She didn't know what she was waiting for but going downstairs felt wrong for her somehow. She walked out on them after all. The evening didn't end on a positive note as she had expected. She didn't regret her decision but it did make things awkward. So she would wait for Mikael to fetch her. It was eleven so she was sure he'd check up on her soon. Only, he didn't. She ended up making the bed and as she did, memories of the night they spent together flowed through and left her red and sweaty. It was the best night of her life, there was no debating it. She felt strongly toward him and the feeling was reciprocated. He was...oh, he was a dream. There were no doubts in her head. He had his flaws like every human being but he cared about her. The tender affection he showed her was proof of that. He made sure to touch every part of her. Kiss every part of her. He was in no rush and it was obvious. He wanted to spend time with her. He enjoyed every

"No!" Kiera heard. The word was so sharp that she stepped back involuntarily. Her heart began racing and she thought of returning to her bedroom. The momentary rush of anger left her body as swiftly as it had come and she felt ashamed for trying to listen to a conversation that didn't concern her. She heard more arguing and remained rooted to the spot. "I make the final decision," Mikael was saying. He was speaking in a tone that she had never heard him use before. It was authoritative and demanded to be obeyed. Even she felt the need to agree with whatever he was saying. "This isn't how it works, Mikael," someone said. She heard a masculine voice. "We've been waiting for this moment for years. The time to attack is now. You promised us three weeks!" There were agreements but she didn't hear his voice amongst them, naturally. It was clear that someone didn't agree with Mikael's thoughts. She wondered what they meant by attack. Attack what? There was a long silence and even Kiera f

Chapter Twenty-Nine
Kiera followed him silently. She wiped her cheeks as they made their way downstairs and tightened her robe. She mentally prepared herself to see everyone gathered downstairs. They didn't disappoint. They were seated around the small coffee table in the living room with rather unsympathetic expressions. Their eyes watched her coldly and a shiver ran through her. She didn't know what they had heard since she and Mikael were upstairs. She felt that she had been screaming. Mikael stopped in front of them and she stopped as well. She was a safe distance away from the whole group. There were a few new additions. There were two men she had never seen before. She asked herself why she was allowing them to put her through this and 'them' included Mikael. She could go home. Nothing was stopping her. This was, by far, the most embarrassing thing that had ever happened to her. Mikael could have discussed it with her in private. He didn't have to bring her entire family, which was beginning to
