Chapter 21: Hailey's Editor
Hailey groaned when she saw her editor's face on her phone. Martine probably wanted to see if she had any stories about Noah. Hailey had no idea how she was going to tap dance around this. She signed a paper saying she wouldn't write about her new pretend boyfriend. "Hello, Martine."Hailey wasn't looking forward to this conversation. She couldn't outright tell Martine about her agreement with Noah. Instead, she had to keep putting her off. Maybe if she got a scoop on someone else then Martine would forget about Noah. He wasn't as interesting for her line of work because there wasn't a lot of gossip. Everyone had assumed he just hid his dirty laundry well. There wasn't any dirty laundry as far as Hailey could see. The only dirt on him was his breakup with Cassandra. It had been public, but despite that the details in the press were scant. "Hailey. Setting in okay?"Did she know where Hailey was living? She hadn't revealed that to Martine because she didn't think it was any of her b

Chaper 22: Noah Agrees
Noah looked down at Hailey's surprised face and smiled. It was odd that he'd just stepped out of a helicopter, but he wouldn't have noticed without her here. "What?""I forget how many resources billionaires have. The rest of us have to grin and bear it when the expressway is backed up. You hire a helicopter." She paused. "Or do you own it?""The studio rented it," Noah said "Right. Because you're a big star."He didn't detect rancor. Instead, he detected some sarcasm. He couldn't help how others saw him, but he didn't want Hailey to think less of him. It was important to him that she saw him for the guy he was. Why? He'd have to ponder that another day. "Did you bring dinner?" she asked. "Helicopters can't go through the drive-thru," he said. She laughed. "Besides we have a chef here," Noah said. They stood in the evening light, but he liked the idea of coming home to someone. He'd never lived with anyone before other than his family. He wanted to share what his day was like min

Chapter 23: The Interveiw
If anyone had asked Hailey, she would have been honest and said that she was nervous to meet Cassandra. The woman was a major star and had a larger-than-life personality. She harkened back to the heydays of Hollywood in that she dressed like an old-time starlet. Hailey suspected that the Cassandra interview would be like no other. Then there was the Noah factor. She'd agreed not to talk about him, but the biggest story in this situation was Cassandra breaking up with him. She had no choice. She studied him after her words and she'd seen him flinch. The last thing she wanted to do was hurt Noah. He'd turned out to be a nice guy. He was helping her out of a jam though not for completely unselfish reasons. "Our breakup?""Yes. My editor insists. I wanted you to be warned."He frowned. "We talked about this.""It's my job, Noah. I have no choice or I will lose it. I can't lose my job. When you leave here and go back to your normal life I still need to pay rent.""You're being compensat

Chapter 24: Noah, Bruised and Battered
Noah felt the breakup all over again as he listened to Cassandra. She'd spouted lies, but at least she hadn't said he was abusive. Everything she accused him of, she'd done to him instead. Hailey sat there recording it all. Noah had kept silent as he'd promised. His heart hurt in a different way from the breakup. He hoped that Hailey didn't believe any of it, but he couldn't be sure. Her face hadn't shown any reaction. They rode down in the elevator in silence, but in her peripheral vision, he could see Hailey glancing his way. He couldn't tell if that meant Hailey had believed Cassandra or not. Noah wasn't ready to talk about it. What Cassandra had said, reopened wounds that Noah had thought healed long ago. His heart lay raw in his chest and he wanted out of the situation. If he could have run screaming from that hotel room, he would have. But he was happy to be there for Hailey. Cassandra would have been worse if Noah hadn't been there to see things. As it was, she'd looked down

Chapter 25: Noah's Fans
"I won't be gone long," Hailey said to Rochester as he stood in the doorway to the house. She didn't technically need to go to the office to file her story on Cassandra, but she wanted personal feedback on it. Besides, she needed to get out of the house. With Noah gone almost twelve hours a day, Hailey was climbing the walls. This foray to her office was welcome. She needed some space from Noah. He'd been out of sight for the last three meals and she wasn't sure she could fix the situation. They had the contract, and if they only had to be together in public, maybe that was better. There was something about him that she couldn't define. He made her uncomfortable and comfortable at the same time. It was like when you scratched an itch, but you irritated your skin by doing it. The traffic into Philadelphia was usually clogged up even though it was no longer rush hour. Probably some construction somewhere. The orange cone was the official flower of Pennsylvania.Hailey reached her offi

Chapter 26: Chased
Everyone paused. Hailey couldn't believe that her command had been that loud. The woman looked at her for a moment and then Hailey pushed her way through the crowd. They were still stunned when she ran to the end of the block. A few short moments later, she heard thundering feet. Was this how the Beatles felt? She was no rock star; she was just dating one. She'd never in her life run after a star. If they escaped her questions, she would find another way to get to them. Even with her job, she still had some dignity. These women were fans and they didn't seem to care about her safety.Hailey turned the corner as she heard shouts behind her. They were gaining on her. In the middle of the block, she noticed a coffee shop. Maybe it had a back door. She slipped into it and slid to the wall that face the shop. The thundering feet went by her. She didn't dare lookout, but there was a man sitting at the table she was near. "They ran past.""Can you keep an eye out? I don't want them to see

Chapter 27: Hailey on the Set
Hailey paced in the kitchen waiting for Noah to be ready to go. Her hands were sweaty and her heart thrummed in her chest. He was taking her to the set to meet the cast. This was her first time on a movie set and she wasn't sure how to act. Of course, she wanted to interview everyone, but it was better to make connections first. She'd eaten breakfast, but it now sat in her stomach like a brick. Hopefully, she'd keep it down. How embarrassing would it be if the first impression she made with these celebrities was to vomit on them? They would remember her for sure, but not in a good way."You ready?" Noah said entering the kitchen. "Yes. How are we getting there?""Kevin of course," he said. Noah had stopped driving himself after the fiasco that had caused him to get a helicopter home. She still marveled at that idea. She would have just been stuck in traffic or hiding out like she had to a few days before now. She studied Noah. They hadn't talked about her interview with Cassandra a

Chapter 28: Kevin Talks Hailey off a Ledge
Kevin paused, but not for long. He whipped open the door for Hailey. "It's none of my business, Miss Johnson, but you look upset.""I am, Kevin, but I don't want to talk about it."She shouldn't feel this jealous of the situation she walked in on. What she and Noah had was a business arrangement. It was mutually beneficial. There should have been no emotion involved, but then shy did she feel betrayed. Kevin closed the door and then walked around the car. He started it and drove out of the parking lot. Hailey couldn't have been more thankful for the ability to escape. Her reaction was that of a girlfriend, so outwardly it was okay that she ran away. Cassandra and the rest of the cast would expect that. Why had the reaction been so natural for her? She hadn't had to think about what the right thing to do was. She'd just done it. She'd reacted to the situation like a girlfriend. That puzzled her. She wasn't Noah's girlfriend and somehow she'd acted like she was. It had been a genuine

Chapter 29: Noah Sees Hailey Differently
"Cut."One word had never sounded so sweet to Noah. It was the last word of his day and he could go home and fix the mess that might be waiting for him. Hailey's reaction to seeing him with Cassandra was too real. He couldn't imagine that she was that good an actress. If there was something there he wanted to explore it. "Heading home to the girlfriend?" Cassandra asked. Noah wanted to rail at her, but he'd said his piece earlier. They had three months of filming they had to get through together and he wasn't going to make it worse. Even if Cassandra was going her best. He wasn't that person and he wouldn't be dragged down to her level. "Yes."He headed off the set to wash off the makeup that had been applied that morning. He should take a whole shower, but he didn't want Hailey to have any more time to fume at him. Assuming that was what she was doing. She hadn't answered any of his texts or phone calls. He was getting worried that she was actually jealous. He couldn't imagine th

Chapter 30: They Take Another Step
"I hope I didn't overplay things," she said, putting a smile on her face. It didn't reflect how she felt. She had been jealous, and every fiber of her being didn't want her to be. Her heart was betraying her far more than Noah had. She didn't need the drama. If Noah was back with Cassandra that was his problem, not hers. They'd signed that contract.Noah didn't move from his spot, but she could see the energy vibrate through his body. He wanted to take action, but she assumed he didn't know what was right. "I don't think so. Everyone believed you."She let out a sardonic laugh. "And I'm not the actor.""You have everyone fooled. It was a great scene. As if from a movie."She set down the weight she'd been using. Without it, she didn't know what to do with her hands. Something had shifted between them. Something was different in the energy between them. As if they'd crossed some barrier, but she didn't know what it was. Hailey toyed with the stitching on the edge of the weight bench.
