Chapter 21.:
“I can see the town.” Peter stood on top of the hill they were about to cross, waiting for his wife and daughter to climb to him. They have been on the way for nearly two weeks now. Tiredness and worries are visible on their faces. Daria reaches the top of the hill briefly before Ariana, offering her help with the last steps. The last days were emotionally exhausting for her. Peter worried their pursuers were getting closer, so they were waking up before sunrise and rushing through the wilderness until the sunset. Not even once had they started the fire. They eat only what they can find on the way from the random sellers marching from one homestead to another or the leftovers they had dried in the bag. Dreams also haunted her every night. She saw Marcus holding her not yet born child while staring at her with a cold dead gaze. She wanted to scream at him to give her the child, but no voice came out of her throat. When she stretched her hand towards him, the bars blocked her from comi

Chapter 22.:
“We should wait for night.” Peter stopped his family several miles away from the town. Daria looks at him with confusion all over her face, but once she sees the town’s wall behind him, she understands instantly what he means. “Entering town at night is impossible. They close the gates.” Daria tells him, but Peter shakes his head. The capital itself is closing its gates for security. Too many people are entering and leaving the capital every day, not to mention the city is the center of the entire country. The most prosperous city in the entire nation. But this town is different. Nobody rarely targets small towns like this one. The country itself doesn’t have a problem with robbers and the strategic position of the town offers this place absolute security. Their gates will remain open even after sunset. But the main reason for Peter stopping his family lies elsewhere. The sudden scent of blockers hit his nose as they were passing near the edge of the forest. Whoever went through this

Chapter 23.:
Peter greeted the guards standing on each side of the main gate. He expected them to ask for his identification, but to his surprise, they simply let him in without a word. Entering the city seemed to be much easier than he imagined. Once Peter enters, he almost instantly blends in with the crowd, adjusting his speed to match the regular passerby not to stand out. The city looked smaller when Peter observed it from the top of the hill several days ago. Surprisingly, the streets here are as wide as those in the capital. They are bursting with life as well. People walk from shop to shop, checking the goods and deciding what to buy. Shopkeepers hire youngsters to stand in front of their shops, shouting promotional discounts just to attract potential customers and sell as much as the people can buy. It didn’t take long for Peter to guess the actual size of the town. The strategist inside let him quickly understand how they constructed the city. Longcron was the biggest city in the region

Chapter 24.:
“What took you so long?” Daria asked him. It was deep dark already and Peter had just arrived at his family's hideout in the woods. Daria watched over her daughter while waiting for her husband. “I had to lose my tail.” Peter tells her, using his army jargon, forgetting he was talking to his wife and not to a warrior. Daria is used to the way her husband talks, so she immediately understands what he means. She didn’t need extra time to understand why her husband insisted on taking another route. Their fear becomes true. “Is he there?” Her eyes hung on her husband’s lips, hungrily waiting for a single word. To her dismay, Peter couldn’t answer that single question. “I don’t know, but his warriors are surely there. Two of them were following me.” Peter replies to her. Daria let out a long sigh. They are trapped. Ariana doesn’t have the energy for them to take another route and prolong the journey. They need to cross the borders as fast as possible, so Ariana can rest in the nearest to

Chapter 25.:
For the past three days, Peter had actively visited villages and farms situated around Longcron. He bought food and ingredients from farms to secure highly nutritious meals for his daughter and the child she carried in her womb. The day after he returned from Longcron, he also searched the foothills of the mountains for a cave. It took him half a day to find one which could offer not only excellent protection from the weather but also cover the fire, which he needed for Daria to cook food. On the third day, Ariana finally looked better. Her cheeks turned partly pink and the horrendous black bags under her eyes were half gone. Ariana’s entire complexion improved rapidly. “We will move tonight,” Peter announced as they were eating their lunch. He returned early in the morning from his visit to the nearby farm, bringing a small chicken and some potatoes and other vegetables farmers stored for themselves to survive the winter. Yesterday, Daria also caught two rabbits for Ariana to hav

Chapter 26.:
Ariana barely stands on her two wobbly legs with the support of her mother, wrapping her arm around her mother’s shoulder. Daria kissed her husband before she let him leave. Before he left, Peter covered their scent, leaving them near Longcron, heading himself deep into the city. To protect his family, he must lure whoever is waiting for them there and get them out. Once done, Daria can sneak inside with their daughter and get her to the passage before they find out he is just a decoy.“Take care.” Daria whispered into the wind, letting those silent words catch up with the shadow of her husband. A little prayer for him to come back to them in one piece.“Why did he leave us?” Ariana asks in a muffled voice. None of them told her the plan they had produced. During the day, they discussed their next strategy. Ariana slept, recovering from her exhaustion. Daria assumed telling her such fearful information would only worsen her health further.“To check if the path is clear for us,” Daria

Chapter 27.:
“Sir, there has been a movement of troops close to our borders.” David went to report to the king. Daniel sits behind the desk, going through the mountain of papers lying on his table for the past few days. He spent his time riding a horse, hunting and walking through the town, speaking with his people instead of dealing with political matters. “Which borders?” He asks, but even without David answering the question, Daniel knows exactly which border has the unwelcome activity. The east border which he shares with Allus Sierra is the only one they are watching for any kind of movements.“Close to Heyward, sir,” David replies, earning the full attention of his king. Daniel lifted his head, staring at David, speechless. Heyward is the city close to Reichard. There is no border on that side. The entire area is impenetrable by any army, especially thanks to the mountains forming a natural border between the two countries.“Are you serious? What kind of army can cross Reichard? Did you re

Chapter 28.:
Ariana slept through the entire day. After nearly three weeks, she finally rested her head on a fluffy pillow, cuddled by the warm blanket, curled on a soft bed. The best sleep she had over the past weeks.“Sweetheart.” The gentle voice of her mother woke her up. Two days ago, they crossed the mountains. The last thing Ariana remembered was the heartrending wolf’s cry followed by a raging Lycan howling. Her thoughts went to the only two men she kept in her thoughts. One of them she loved the most and the other one she feared the most.Ariana didn’t have to guess twice to whom the howling belonged. The only Lycan in the entire country was no one else but the father of her unborn child. But the wolf’s cry was the sound which echoed in her soul. The cries which she hoped for did not belong to her father. “Did he come back?” Ariana asked her mother with high hopes. She didn’t even properly open her eyes, but cared so much to see her father. She didn’t care about the food, about the water

Chapter 29.:
Peter scanned the entire area around the town, standing tall on the east wall of Hayward. At one moment, he thought he saw a movement down in the woods, but a second later, he found nothing but a shadow among the moving trees. Peter knows Marcus won’t leave them alone, not even in this foreign country. No father would leave his child willingly. In his case, the urge to protect his heir is much stronger than Peter’s sense of responsibility towards his own baby girl. Peter had no doubts about it.“Is he down there?” Ariana talks to her father, startling him. She shouldn’t be out here. For the past three days, she had rested in the tavern, taking short strolls around the street, but her parents didn’t allow her to walk any further into the town. She suffered from dizziness spells and morning sickness, and had not entirely recovered from the trip. Her pregnancy takes away her entire energy.Peter remembers the day when his mate came home from work, telling him about her pregnancy. He coul

“Please, allow me to introduce myself.” The tall guy spoke even before they sat around the table inside the tavern. Before they entered, a tall guy sent his guards to empty the area so they could talk in private.“My name is Trenton Hildebrant. Major General of Edeirland’s army and loyal subject of His Highness, Daniel Colton. Thanks to you, sir.” Trenton emphasized the last part of his introduction, fueling the further confusion written all over Peter’s face. He didn’t understand what Trenton was talking about.“I don’t think I need to introduce my family. You appear to know about us quite well.” Peter speaks with confidence while Trenton agreeably nods his head, confirming Peter’s assumption.“What do you mean, thanks to me?” Peter looked at the relatively young guy sitting in front of him. He stared at that face for quite a while now, trying to remember when and where he had seen that face before. No recollection of that face came to his mind.“We briefly met twenty years ago in Ed
