Emily stepped out into the brisk evening air, the weight of her recent incarceration still hanging heavily on her shoulders. The twilight sky was a muted canvas of grays and purples, reflecting her mood as she hesitated at the threshold of the halfway house. A sigh evaded her dry lips as she proceeded towards the entrance. Every step trudged in outright fear and rage.

Emily snagged a sight of her mum plopped in the living room. She curled her lips in a breath and pushed the door further. Sally’s eyebrows creased at the sight of her daughter.

“Emily!” Sally exclaimed. She rushed towards Emily, hands wide open, her voice flickering with excitement. The whiff of her cologne sped into Emily’s nostrils as they embraced for what felt like an eternity.
