Elaine’s POV

Riley and I sat at a cozy table in the corner of the cafe, trying to enjoy a moment of peace after the tumultuous events of the day. The atmosphere was relaxed, the soft chatter of other patrons creating a soothing background noise.

However, the peace was short-lived as I noticed the stares directed our way. People whispered behind their hands, casting disapproving glares in our direction.

It was clear that news of the incident with Mr. Thompson had spread, and the judgmental looks made me feel like an outcast. Besides, I was already a murderer in their eyes. Nothing will ever change that even if I were to be proven not guilty.

When the waitress approached our table, her demeanor was cold and standoffish. She glanced at me with thinly veiled disdain, clearly hesitant to serve me. Before I could say anything, Riley's expression hardened, and a low growl rumbled in her throat.
