Book Of Light

Now thanks to Hollywood and a certain TV show about three sisters with magic, many of our ways have been exposed but luckily with a different take on things. Let's just say a lot of it has been embellished or renamed but at the heart of it, a lot of it is close enough.

Of course, we have dark magic, but as a Light Witch to practice any type of dark magic is against every fiber of our being. One thing we are NEVER to do is practice something called Necromancy, which is attempting to raise the dead. This is completely unnatural and if someone is powerful enough to succeed in doing this, there is always a hefty price to pay.

Every Witch or Warlock will be handed the Book Of Light when they come into their powers. It's simply a book of light spells and in popular culture has been known to be called The Book Of Shadows, Grimoire, or The Book Of Spells - none of which are actually correct.

The book is sacred to us and we protect it like that of the Bible. It can also be used to add your own spells as these aren't exhaustive - Witches and Warlocks are always coming up with their own spin on spells.

My best friend Charlotte was also a Witch, but when she died her own Book Of Light was missing, and to this day it's never been recovered. Due to our unofficial existence, it isn't like we can tell the Police that piece of information. My mum's coven did their best to try to locate it but still to no avail. It looks like it will just be one of those mysteries that will never be solved; such is life.

Both Charlotte and I used to work on spells together, but we never once looked at each other's books. They're as private as a diary and tailored to each Witch or Warlock's individual powers. To read it would be an epic breach of trust unless the individual is no longer here. From the moment I moved into my own place, I've kept it locked away in a safe where only I know the combination. It would be hard to explain if it found its way into the hands of someone who didn't have powers. They would think I was a lunatic and no doubt try to lock me up.

Plus Salem prides itself on being a vibrant urban community and the Witch Trials still capture the imagination of people everywhere around the world so who are we to argue? The people of this city have managed to use the atrocities of 1692 to their advantage and have made it a thriving tourist industry that has created so many jobs.

I just wish Charlotte was still here to continue sharing and experiencing all of it with me.
