He returned with the pills and met her in the same position he had left her. A shadow of guilt and pity darkened her eyes but he glanced away immediately.

“Just one.” He dropped it on the table, together with a glass of water and left the room.

Few minutes later, she heard a loud bang on the door and jerked in surprise.

“Marc? Are you expecting someone? She asked but heard no reply from him.

Maybe it could be one of their needy neighbors, she thought to herself and reached for the door.

As soon as she opened it, an audible gasp left her throat. She stood still, wilting like a flower in a furnace.
