Emma:
The next early morning, as usual for the nightmare, I am the first one to wake up in the house, with my heart rate speeding and sweat all over my body.
No time for me to jog and cast off the fears today. After taking a short shower, I dig Lei up from my bed and kick her out to drive her car out of the driveway.
When I get downstairs, Zoey starts to continuously bark at me. I jump into the car quickly but she rushes over with her viciously growling. What’s wrong with this she-beast? I thought she hated me but it seems like she doesn’t want me to go.
Mum hushes Zoey away and hands me a can of pepper spray in a choked voice, “Keep this on you at all times, and call me as soon as you get there.”
“I will, mum. Don’t worry. I am a black belt! Take care of yourself. ”
I look at mum through the rear window. She is just watching me all the way. I know the expression in her eyes. Rye had the same eyes when he was leaving me.
“Are you OK? You know, we don’t have to do the internship anyway.”
“Yeah, we would just be sitting on the couch eating out a big tub of Ben & Jerry and watching marathons of our favorite movies. But it’ll be much funnier to be --” I click the intern-camp website on my phone,“-- a part of an old private university which was built in 18th century.”
The host of the intern-camp, Paradigm University, is known for its prestigious principles, refined quality of education, and closed system. It refuses to accept students out of Region City where it’s located in.
“No wonder the campus is in such a jungle. ” Lei pulls into the road
of the outer radius of the campus. The houses surrounding the university are made completely out of wood, just like log cabins at a resort, with trees dividing them from other house which appear scattered amongst the area. It’s absolutely beautiful, but there is no one around as we pass by except cars ahead of us heading towards the university.
“It’s weird.” I frown at the deserted road. Suddenly, a squirrel flashes out from the woods and winces at me. And then a rabbit, a hedgehog, even a deer.
“So your dog is not the only animal who hates you. ”Lei stares at them with her mouth wide open. “Who are you? A witch who loves to throw frogs into your cauldron?”
“Just a coincidence. Your car scared them. Hey, look.” Some model-style guys and girls are walking along the road as Lei drives towards the university gate.
“Oh THESE are hot people, alright?” Lei looks excitedly at the guy with a Paradigm standing at the front of the line.
I keep silent. He would be considered handsome, big built, muscular with a bright smile, but it still does nothing for me. Maybe I AM broken.
We get out of the car, being surrounded with a huge amount of students. But I can tell there’s a hierarchy here: the students from other schools like me and Lei are outsiders, normal, various, nobody care, so we’re crowded as the tail of the queue; the good-looking guys are kind of residents, an incestuous and unrestrained bunch; and -- I look around and find a jogging trail, at the end of which, there comes a small group of superstars. I can’t see their faces clearly because of the distance but I do feel the switch of atmosphere. Those residents look at them with curiosity and admiration, which also makes the outsiders marvel at them.
But hey, we don’t even know them! Lei and I share a look, which translates as ‘the snobbish people’.
“They are The Founders’ Kids.”
“The owner of the university.”
The voices belong to the two tall girls stopping beside us, one with ash blond hair, and the other with dark hair. Both of them also look like models and extremely beautiful with muscles.
The blonde beauty makes out what I’m wondering. “Yes, we’re students here but no, we don’t like our schoolmates.
You two are from Trinity University, right?”“Yep, I am Lei and this is my best friend Emma.” Lei says pointing towards me.
“Nice to meet you guys, I’m Shanny, and this is Liz.” says the dark-haired girl.
“I think the four of us will be roommates.”“Ah-huh. Like I said, we don’t like our schoolmates.” Liz shrugs, “That’s why we have to share a room with you.”
I like them.
“OK, roommates! Why don’t you be our guides? I’m too starving to wait for the orientation. ” Lei regains her excitement and good appetite.
“Sure. We have the best chef in our cafeteria, and she makes the best jam tart.”
Perfect. "I’m a sugar addict."
I get two pieces of the jam tart as I wish.
“Don’t look at me like a puppy, darling. I’ll just serve whatever you need.” The chef says with smiling eyes, shaking her head, “What’s your name, doll?”
“Emma. Sorry, I just can’t help myself.” I used to look at Mum in this way for begging another piece of cake or pie. ”And what should I call you, ma’am?”
“Landry. I’m a supplier to all sugar addicts.” she winks at me.
“Thank you so much,
Ms. Landry. I think I just found my favorite person in this place.” I wink back and she giggles. As I reach Shanny’s side, she looks at my plate in shock. “Landry
doesn’t even give the Founding people two pieces! How did you manage to do that?”“Yeah, I have the same question.” A deep voice inserts with pent-up angry and confusion.
I look back and see the most attractive guy that I’ve ever seen in my life.
“He’s the founder’s nephew, Cole.” Liz whispers to me and Lei.
Cole stands out in the small group around him, although all of them are beautiful creatures: The first that appears to be the leader is a tall, blonde and extremely muscular guy, passionately speaking to a red-haired girl that is hanging of his arm
with her boobs half raised out of her dress. Behind them is another girl that is similar in features to the leader which makes them definitely siblings; and next to her are male twins with chestnut brown hair, even taller than the first guy, one of which appears to have a smiles while the other appears to be more stoic. But Cole. He is far more than handsome and dangerous to me. Not because he has an angry expression on his face that seems as if he is always angry, but for my feelings to him. I have never felt attraction to hot guys except
towards Cole.I can’t react. I just want
to be close to him.“Who are you?”
While my gaze is fixed on him, his cold gray eyes finally turn to me.
Cole: The human girl makes me dizzy. She has olive skin with a tinge of red by her cheekbones. And the freckles on the edge of her cheekbones reminds me of the stars half-hiding in the rosy-pink clouds before the sunset. The sunset I always dream of in my nightmares. “I’ve never seen a girl having such a sweet tooth. ” Avery, one of the twin boys, accosts her with a smile. “I do physical exercise every day.” Avery’s gaze runs over her beautiful body. “Yeah. You don’t have to limit your sugar intake to me. What sports do you do? Maybe I’d join you next time.” My wolf is agitated. I don’t like her, but I hate it more that Avery’s flirting with her.
Emma: After enjoying the delicious meal and tart, we go to the auditorium for orientation. Cole and his “Paradigm Royalty Group” (a nickname Lei came up with for them) are taking their seats in the center as we walk in. He and I have an eye contact when I pass him by, which sends shivers down my spine. Grrrrrr... I stop and frown. There’s a restless growl somewhere but I don’t see any animal around. And it seems like nobody notices that except me. Cole looks away. I start to suspect that I just had an illusion because of his influence on me. Liz grabs me to sit down. She and Shanny, with the other students from Paradigm University sit in the front row of this aisle; Lei and I with the students from Trinity Universi
Cole: Emma. I think deeply, trying to figure out why her name sounds so familiar to me. But Rachel’s stagy voice is so annoying. “...We have the glass broken on the door, the dishes broken on the floor, and the blood splattered on the counter. There is a note that makes it like a suicide but the hand writing is rushed with a bit of blood droplets on it. And if we take a look at the body hanging from the fan, there is no chair anywhere around. So how could the dead hang himself? Besides, there’s hair on his clothes that does not belong to him. All of these mean he was murdered by someone.” I don’t like the superior and scornful way Rachel looks at Emma. Both of them are humans, weak and mediocre. She’s no better than Emma. “Well then Emma, what’s your deduction?” Dete
Emma: Sam is a nice, well-trained pair, even though she’s one of those snobs. We went blow for blow, really having fun until the beast growl started to haunt me. I ask Sam to stop and take a water break. My mouth is dry, not only because of the training, but also for catching a glimpse of Cole’s muscular arms. His t-shirt, which has become semitransparent, practically sticks to his sculpted body. I can almost feel the droplets of sweat carrying heat running over his skin. The beast keeps growling, sometimes excitedly, sometimes irritably. I’m not sure it’s from Cole or Avery because this pair are too close. They are good fighters with graceful movements. But I find myself hard to focus on both of them because my attention is always drawn back to Cole.
Cole: The yoga pants gluing to her body perfectly shows her body shape. She’s not skinny but more curvaceous. I see a tattoo on her lower back when her t-shirt rolled up as she raised her hands to coil her black hair into a bun. Every time she moves, the tattoo ripples on her silky skin. My wolf growls. I feel dizzy again. She suddenly turns around with her fear blowing to me. I become alert and tense my body. “You shouldn’t be here now.” It’s my shift to patrol around. I realized by scent that someone was in the gym. I thought it was because of the distance that the scent was ambiguous. She must have walked along the path near the forest to the gym. And dawn is dangerous for a human girl, especially here. We have wolves everywhere; besides, God knows what those witc
Emma: "What kind of monster are you? How are you even real? And who the hell are you calling a witch? Do I look like a fucking witch to you" I try to shove his hands off my neck. He looks like a maniac. Cole looks at me with his brow furrowed. I know I am not going crazy, everything about him points to something supernatural that I have come across in books. He adds more pressure to my neck making it a bit difficult to breathe properly. "Don't play innocent here" "Maybe we should take a few steps back" Gryphon interrupts. "What the hell is going on?" some guy screams and Cole's hands on my neck relaxes and I use all my strength to shove him off me. "She is a witch Ty" Cole points towards me. "No I am not and you are a monster" I try to get as far as I can away from him but he catches me by the back of my shirt. "I can solve this" Gryphon pipes in and we all turn towa
Emma: I am running again in the forest and the beast is just behind me. The exit of the woods seems so close and just as I turn out I come across a field full of wolves fighting with other wolves. There is different colors in the air and I can see people standing there. I turn looking for someone but I can't remember who. I run to the middle and something slams into me from behind. Then I see Lei and she is on fire. I can't control the pain that radiates through me and I fall. I awake with a splitting headache. I look towards the clock and it is after 6, well I have to admit that is first time. For the past two years my nightmare always woke me at 4. Rubbing my eyes I turn towards Lei and she is sitting there staring at me. “What?” “Who are you and what have you done to my best friend?” I look at her with confusion “Huh?” “You are late for work” “Oh shit” I run into the bath room and see that I have my sport
Cole:I was having such a relaxing evening and then trouble came in the form of Emma. I tried my best to keep my eyes off her when she was on the dance floor but once Malcom put his hands on her my wolf took over. Avery just agitates him more by flirting with Emma. I keep reminding my wolf that we belong to Silver.“What the hell is your problem?” Emma asks and I turn towards her and get a proper look of her up close and her scent fills my senses and my wolf starts fighting for control again. Wanting to show everyone that she belongs to us. I manage to shove him back and notice that Emma was not talking to Malcom but to me.“Come again” I say.“I could have handled that myself” she shoves me.“No doubt, trouble” I smirk at her because I know that pisses her off.“Huh?” she looks at me in confusion. Memory can be such a fickle thing.“Well what do expect to happen to you
