Chapter 1

I stared at my laptop screen furiously,

"Arrgh, I can't come up with anything," I yelled, my voice filled with frustration.

"Come on, Jeanne, you have to submit that before 6 p.m. today," said my mom as she walked past my room with a laundry basket in her hands.

I continued my staring contest with the laptop screen.

I had to finish my application for Magdalene's school for proper ladies.

Against my will, obviously.

I want to go to a normal high school like everyone else, but my mom doesn't think it'll be the best decision for someone like me.

I'm the perfect example of a tomboy, or at least that's what I like to believe. I mean, I dress like a boy, and I'm always getting into fights and causing trouble.

I'm sure this explains why my mom wants me to go to a school for "proper ladies." My older sister went there too, and I don't even know who she is anymore.

I rolled my eyes and began to type, and in about thirty minutes, I was done.

' I'm done! ' I yelled as I walked down the stairs to meet the rest of my family.

I'm 16 years old, I'm tall, not so pretty, and I have nice curly hair, which I always leave free. My older sister, Mary, is 19 and in college now.

We used to be the same and so close, but as soon as she came back from the proper whatever school, she suddenly changed. Now my younger sister Chelsea is 13. My dad passed away when Mary was 10, and since then my mom has taken care of us alone.

***********

Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months.

The day has finally come; I'm finally going to the trashy school. I wished every day that it was just a dream, but my mother's anticipation reminded me of the reality.

Life!

I felt my stomach drop as we approached the school gates—even the school gates made me cringe.

"Mum, do I have to do this?"

"Yes, baby girl, mommy already paid, and I ain't some charity organization tossing all my money around."

'Mum!'

"Common Jay, you'll get to see us during Christmas."

Did she just say Christmas?

"Mum, it's freaking May!" I continued to throw a tantrum, and my sister laughed.

"Yeah, laugh all you want, Chelsea; it'll be your turn soon anyway." I roared at her, and she muttered something she wasn't confident enough to say to my face.

Sooner or later, we arrived within the school's extremely large compound.

I took my time to examine it; there were several extremely tall buildings spreading farther than my eyes could see, and upon the ground we stood was grass.

I gasped

Quite impressive.

I felt a tap on my shoulder, and I turned to see a huge lady with brown hair, blue eyes, and lips colored with poorly applied lipstick.

"Come this way; I'll show you to your room," she said calmly.

"Ok, bye, Jeanne; we can't go any further." I heard the twist in my mother's voice as I turned to give her and my sister a partial wave, not because I didn't care but because I didn't want them to see the tears running down my cheeks.

Common, it's me, the one and only Jeanne Brown. I'm not supposed to be a crybaby.

I honestly missed them already; after my dad died, I suffered from trauma and started dressing like a boy because I wanted to look like my dad. My mom and sisters went through hell because of me.

I was only 7; don't judge me.

'Here we are miss Brown'.

I straightened agitatedly. I couldn't believe I was so deep in thought that I didn't even know how we got to this large white door.

I noticed there were other white doors in the hallway; this one read room G2A.

The lady walked away without uttering a word.

I guess this is it. I took a deep breath and opened the door slowly.
