I woke up.

Yes, I didn't die.

I was in the same room as when I fainted after walking down a billion stairs.

"Jay, omg, Jay, I heard what happened," Katie said as she ran into the room. My eyes were barely open because of my splitting headache, but I saw how wet her face was with tears.

"I'm fine, really," I replied as she helped me get up.

"I'm sorry I wasn't the one to rescue you; I know how weak you are." She ranted, and my brows rose because her tone offended me.

"Wait, I don't understand; what do you mean by weak?" I tried to yell, but I was too weak to do so.

"Like I know how weak you are, Jay, in a white society, and how hard it must be for you to be in a white school." "That's why I'm your friend—to help you." She blurted out.

"Oh! So this is about race," I thought, and my heart wept bitterly.

"So technically, you decided to be friends with me because you think I'm weak?" I said, with the pitch of my voice rapidly rising.

The nurse just went about her usual business, like a fig
