23. Confusing feelings

I went downstairs late.

It wasn’t like I decided to take a nap or spent too much time on my makeup. I deliberately went late.

I’d like to think I knew George a bit and I knew he was going to make me sit with him if I attended early. I wanted him to be seated already before I got there, which was why I took the elevator thirty minutes past three.

George was obsessed with being early which meant the event was going to start as planned no matter what. I also knew that by the time I got down, the introductory part, aka, the boring part, would be done with. They’d move on to lunch before they properly started the fundraising.

True to my words, by the time I got to the hall, it was buzzing with people. Some of them were seated while others were standing and conversing. It wasn’t a very big party but it was quite scary because everyone present was influential in one way or the other.

My black dress clung to me like second skin and I was beginning to regret wearing it. For
