22. Sensitive spot

George’s surprise gift gave me an idea of what I was to expect. I knew it was fancy but I didn’t know it was dinner-gown fancy. I expected everyone to be at their best and dress eloquently. I just didn’t see myself wearing a dress for fucking lunch.

“Have fun!” Maya bade me farewell as I opened the door to leave.

I snorted. “I wish.” There was nothing fun about sitting around over privileged white folks. I doubted anything good came out of it as well.

The drive to the location took longer than expected. But then again, it was New York and the traffic always surprised me. The luncheon was being held at a luxurious hotel which was owned by one of George’s friends, which had made it easy to secure the location.

By the time I arrived, it was a few minutes past twelve and even if everything had already been arranged, there were still a lot of employees running around like headless chickens.
