I had lunch with Dean before meeting Shawna at the mall after seeing the doctor and starting birth control pills. I had mentioned to Shawna that I wanted to appear a little bit prettier and less tomboyish. Years of pressure from my mother had convinced me to go, but I didn't want to dress the way she did—in tight, revealing attire and plenty of makeup. I needed to strike a balance between wanting to be more girly and remaining true to myself.

Shawna dragged me to several shops where she assisted me in choosing clothes, which Dean purchased using Levi's credit card. She gave me several excellent slacks and shirts, as well as many simple, dark-colored outfits. I was content with everything as she dragged me inside a posh underwear store.
