“Why are you here?”

It was a harmless question, but the tone of annoyance in Grey’s voice made me freeze. “I came to see if you were feeling better. You seemed mad in the morning.” I inched a few steps closer to him. His face had been peaceful when I entered the garden, but when he noticed me, his foul mood came back. Maybe I could make him feel better, I mean who else if not his mate?

There was an ache in my heart, but I ignored it and focused on Grey instead.

“I’m fine.” Grey waved his hand dismissively and turned away from me. “It’s fine, nothing you need to bother yourself with.” Nodding, I hesitantly sat beside him and raised a hand to his face, but he flinched.

What was that? Hurt, I retreated my hand to my side. Why did he react like a cat that had gone through trauma? When I touched his lap, he tensed beneath my touch. That should have been enough to push me away, but I didn’t want to give up. “What’s wrong Grey?” I wished he would look into my eyes.
