Pass the Buck
“Heather could do it.” Cassidy’s answer was so quick, it seemed rehearsed. “She needs the practice, you know, finding people on demand. She hasn’t done much of that.”“We could ask Heather,” Cadence began, keeping her tone even, “but it might take her a while to locate him, and you could tell us right this very second exactly where he is.”Once again, Cassidy seemed to be having trouble swallowing. “It takes me a little bit of time to find people, too.”“Yeah, I know. But... you could tell us right now, without digging into his head, couldn’t you?” Cadence said again.Cassidy turned her head sideways and studied Cadence for a moment. The older sister didn’t blink or look away, only held her insistence. “He asked me to keep his personal information to myself.”“Why?” Cadence asked. “Why would he trust you after what just happ

Some Answers
“How do you....” A knock on the door interrupted her thought. “Did Mrs. Carminatti tell you?”He didn’t answer, only raised his eyebrows at her, and Cadence felt the urge to laugh for a moment before she remembered the situation with Cass and was no longer amused.“Hey y’all,” Heather said, traipsing in. “How’s it goin’?”“We’re good, Heather,” Aaron said, gesturing for her to take a seat at the table. The girl looked around for a moment. “This here’s a nice office. Big. Oh, look at this table! It’s bigger than my family’s whole cabin.” She ran her hand along the finish, and Cadence hid her smile behind her hand. She had no idea what it would be like to spend a century inside of a black hole, but she could only imagine life would look a lot different when she came back out.Aaron pulled out the seat Cassidy had vacated for Heather

Are You Still?
Cassidy left the office and immediately went to Brandon’s apartment. She had no intention of going there when she got out of that chair, but that’s where her feet led her. This time when she knocked, it wasn’t bone shattering like it had been the night before. Waiting let her mind wander, but she didn’t want to go back over the conversation she’d just had with Aaron and Cadence. It was too upsetting. She’d gone into that meeting fully intending to tell them where Christian was, of even contacting him while they were sitting there. But that hadn’t happened. Why, she wasn’t sure. Part of it truly was the promise she’d made to him. However, as much as she didn’t like to admit it, she hadn’t wanted to tell Cadence simply because she’d asked. Her sister had positioned her in the middle of a standoff—keep your promise or help the team. In the end, she’d decided to be stubborn and stick to her guns.

In His Mind
“I know. That’s what I said to him. But he knew I was the only one who could do what he needed to be done. Except for Heather, but she wouldn’t be as reliable, and there was a chance she wouldn’t want to do it anyway. For some reason, he also thought I’d be less likely to tell my sister or Aaron.”“That makes no sense.”“I know. But he knew how desperate I was to do something to stop Daunator, so when he told me his plan, I decided to go along with it.”“Daunator?” Brandon echoed, leaning forward slightly, his forehead wrinkling. “What do you mean?”“Christian went after Daunator. By himself. He needed me to help him with some information about who might be working with Daunator and to try to help him find the monster. He also wanted me to get into Daunator’s head, but I can’t really do that. Anyway, Christian swore me to secrecy because he didn’t w

The Truth About Alex
“Hey, Cass, it’s okay.” He leaned forward on the couch, his hand outstretched, though he didn’t quite touch her. “Whatever it is, you can tell me.” His fingertips rested on her knee, about as far as he could reach, and Cassidy desperately wished she was in his arms again. The pain inside of her may have been caused by another guy, but it was Brandon’s arms that had held her together in the past when she felt as if she were falling apart. Still, it seemed wrong to ask him to wrap her up when she was about to disclose information to him that very well could make him feel exactly the way she was feeling at the moment. With another deep breath, she looked him in the eye and slowly opened up. “You were right about Alex.” She watched him start to attempt to decipher what that meant, his eyes shifting slightly with the news. “I had no idea how he felt about me when he was still here, but the note he wrote me while he was dy

Decoding the Past
Listening to the conversation with Skelton was both frustrating and a little creepy. Not only did the man sound like he was crazy, very little of what he was saying made any kind of sense at all. Even with the entire leadership team sitting around the conference table, poring over every bit of information, dissecting every word, going over the conversation ten times didn’t make any of them feel any more confident that they had any idea why the old man had taken the risk and showed up on campus to begin with.“The clippings are significant,” Hannah said, looking over the ones she had in front of her. “We know that Daunator has done this before, though it has been a while.”“I wonder why something like this never made it to the history books,” Elliott questioned. “Sure are a lotta people to go missing at once.”“Maybe for the same reason not a lot of media are reporting it now,” Jamie said. “D

Back to That Night
It was hard to believe Jamie, Aaron, and Hannah had all been here so many years ago when the tragedy had taken place, but it was true just the same. Only she and Aurora, who was twenty-seven, hadn’t been born. Elliott was still in Oklahoma at the time, and Cadence realized she had no idea if he’d ever met her grandfather or not. The question would have to wait for later as the conversation on the tape took a shift.Skelton was going on about a tracking mechanism that sounded similar to the one they used now to locate Vampires, though the technology was behind their current capabilities, and Jordan said it all sounded good, that he should check in with Christian to see if he had any thoughts. “He’s our go-to man when it comes to those sorts of things. Aaron helps out, too,” Jordan continued, and Cadence remembered Aaron had actually come up with the device Jordan was wearing to collect the conversation they were listening to, “but we’r

Death by Guardian
“But Skelton said not to take any Hunters,” Elliott noted. “Remember?” He looked at Cadence, and she nodded. “Do you think that’s because Daunator can’t kill Guardians?”Cadence wasn’t sure if the question was to her or in general, but she answered. “I have no idea if he can or can’t. But... why keep Christian in a hole in the ground if he can kill him?”“To lure us there,” Aaron replied quickly.“Do you think he can kill Guardians?” Aurora asked the Guardian Leader.“No.” Once again, Aaron’s response was definitive. “But that doesn’t mean he isn’t dangerous. We know he can get into people’s minds, even if we don’t believe Skelton’s story that Daunator made him kill Jordan because Daunator jumped Cassidy last night.”Jamie’s voice was so quiet at first, Cadence almost didn’t recogniz

Some Personal News
“If he’s been through both portals, like Skelton said, he’ll have all sorts of tricks we’ve never seen before, or at least not in a long time,” Jamie reminded them.“He’s one scary son of a bitch,” Cadence agreed. “But Christian has left us little choice. Maybe if he would’ve stayed here, we could’ve gone over there and fought the symptoms, taken out his henchmen, cut off his blood supply. But now... our hands are tied. We can’t leave him there....”“Well....” Elliott began.“There it is. I’ve been waiting for it this whole time.” Aaron smirked at his friend, but it was clearly a warning, too.“I’m just kidding.” Elliott raised both of his hands in protest. “Here’s another question for you, though. We take Cass, Brandon’s gonna insist we take him, even if they are currently split up. I don’t want him to go e

A Different Sort of Vampire
The streets of Budapest were emptier than usual. It was nearly 1:00 in the morning, but this part of town was generally populated by people out looking for a good time or enough booze to drown their sorrows well until the early morning hours. Eliza thought perhaps the desolation was due to the local news finally discussing all of the missing persons, though they were still under-reporting by LIGHTS’s numbers. Hearing that hundreds were suddenly gone had to have some effect on even the people who would’ve normally been out and about in this area of town. That didn’t deter her team from taking a look around. Cassidy was working directly with Mila now, which sucked because it meant Eliza would no longer have the upper hand. She’d enjoyed having a bit of information that her boss didn’t. When Mila had asked her why she hadn’t been forthcoming with who was talking to her, Eliza had feigned innocence, insisting she’d had no idea the informa
