Zephaniah's Trick
“You’re the reaper!” There was conviction and anger in his voice. Zephaniah racked her brains for the seer’s identity and remembered he’s named Stuart, a seer from the Masaque Empire who illegally crossed the border to join forces with Henry. They’re both about twenty-five years old and was branded a fugitive in their early twenties. The Council was yet to know the reason why they’re collecting strings, but they guessed they just wanted to prolong their life. In case it’s something more, Zephaniah was also tasked to unravel it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about!” She looked around the trees, squinting. She didn’t need to be a seer or a sensory Wielder to know that Stuart came to fetch her alone. It’s a brave feat considering the reputation Zephaniah had built. Stuart’s midnight-black orbs flickered, yellowish threads circling the line of her irises up to the centermost part of it. At once, he’d seen Zephaniah running away with Stuart lying on th

Impatience
“So you’re finally awake!” said Michelle, her hands folded across her chest. She was wearing the Skipper’s uniform, her curly hair tied in a bun, paving the way to her bitchy features.“What’s happened?” was the first question Z could come up with. Her whole body was still throbbing, her hands a little numb. A part of her was still under the delusion that she’s back on the very first mission she received directly from Henmulga.Of course, the mission was a success but because she was drained of energy, she was unable to clean the mess. She had to answers many queries as to why she was surrounded by corpses. It was fortunate that Henmulga silenced them, for she was having a hard time finding the right words to say.The criminals’ deeds, apparently, were only discovered right after they were dead. They were cunny enough to create a clone of their victims and put it under the care of the parents. However, this c

Acceptance
Silence greeted Z the moment she woke up. Only the crickets were singing a lullaby from outside. Though the rhythm they were orchestrating was low and serene, it didn’t, in any way, tone down the rapid beat of her heart. The curtains were still drawn around her bed. Its whiteness only made Z feel worse. She needed to get out of here as soon as she could to prepare the head of the headmaster. There was no backing down now. She only had two days and hesitation would never be able to help her battle the headmaster. What she needed now was a concrete plan. For that, she needed a place to make her mind work, and this place wouldn’t do the trick.Sighing, Z started plucking the small tubes piercing her wrists, closing her eyes as she started feeling a little dizzy. She then fumbled on her feet, breathing heavily as her chest throb.‘This is not good!’ she thought. There’s no way she could be closer to getting the headmaster’s

Confrontation
Z’s heart was heavy as she sat cross-legged in the middle of the field. It’s been over two hours and, despite the glares of the sun, she was still yet to complain. She didn’t know if anyone noticed her absence, but she bet they would. But like usual, they wouldn’t care enough to look for her. That wasn’t her concern, though. It was the fact that no matter how drenched her uniform gets, she remained clueless as to how she’d get the headmaster’s head. There’s no way she could be toe to toe with him, especially that she had no shadow and her life-energy wouldn’t be of use unless she had a death wish.Far from that, she also felt a little concerned about what the Nobles would feel after they hear her betrayal. It would really turn out to be a big disappointment for them, considering their jubilant screams and upfront acceptance for her existence. Somehow, she’s having a second thought of being a murderer.B

The Deadly Deal
Z could almost taste the tension as she smirked, still sitting on the desk, the headmaster clenching his fist, glaring at her. The council members, meanwhile, pointed their spear at Z. She didn’t know much about the council in this era, but she’s a bit disappointed that they’re already hiring weaklings, or at least that’s how she perceived it.Turning her back at the headmaster, she raised her brows at the council members. “So, what are you three doing here?”“It’s none of your concern,” said one of them, his silvery voice sounding distant.Faking a gasp, Z moved back a little, swaying her crossed legs, her left hand on her chest. “That’s very rude of you, Sir!”“It is of the Council’s root to keep everything they do confidentially, Zephaniah. I thought you, of all Wielder, knew that.”“Well, Luis, unlike you, I do consider change in whatever I do. Time-

The Might of Dark's Daughter
The tension was palpable as Luis and Zephaniah glared at each other. They have about ten meters distance and a dagger in both hands. Behind them was the half-body of the sun peering beyond the horizon, excited for what’s to take place but had no time to spare. As the sky turned to a deeper blue, a tint of indigo already visible, together with the tiny, twinkling stars, Luis walked closer to Z, his midnight-blue robe whipping in the air. He stopped right in front of her.“I cannot use my shadow,” he started, his weathered face void with emotion. “One attempt and the council members would be able to interfere in this battle. This is one-way of leveling the playing field. Now, it’s fair and square. At the end of the night, one of us will have to sleep… forever.”Z clenched her fist, narrowing her eyes. As far as she knew, Luis was the Wielder of memory. It’s a very tricky prowess that took advantage of a foes’ life to

Seer Sees
The death of the legendary Luis was known only to Z. She who buried him at the outskirt of the forbidden forest cried a bucket of tears, her hands shaking hard as it clenched on the shovel. Humming a lullaby, she reminded herself that Luis’s sacrifices would save more lives, though it never gave her a sense of reassurance. On the contrary, it made her feel lonely as ever; she now faced uncertainties with the battles she would soon encounter. But as a consolation prize, she’d be able to see George’s face once again and also for the last time. Her hands were still shaking as she sat on top of the grave, looking up at the moon that was the sole witness of everything that had happened. As usual, it wouldn’t be able to do anything as she went about her day, trying to forget the corpses she buried. Luis’s crimson blood would forever put a scar on Z’s palm. She could still feel its warmth even though she already wiped it off. “How many lives have I taken? Ho

Back to the Skippers
Z didn’t sleep that night. She couldn’t afford to close her eyes because, every time she did, her memories would start to play in her head. It’s making her nuts. She guessed it had something to do with Luis reading a fragment of her past while they were in the middle of the fight. Who would’ve thought that his prowess still irked her even though he’s already gone? In a way, Luis triumphed as well, considering how much weight he’d left for her. When four in the morning strikes, Z took the time to write a letter for the Nobles. She would now leave them for good. It was a nice experience being with them, but she still needed to observe two more classes. The war’s fast approaching. They might be ignorant to its calls, but Z could feel it drawing nearer, its rotting hands reaching out to them. While writing, Z was suddenly reminded of the Council Members in the headmaster’s office. Good thing she prepared a ghoul who she molde

Back to the Skippers 2
Briane spent his night sitting astride, staring at the blank canvas he was supposed to paint on. He knew time was running and that the night was growing deeper; even so, he couldn’t hope to touch his brush unless he could come up with a concept. That’s the problem, though. Anything he could think of was just not good enough for him to be entertained.Swearing, he lied down on the glass-made ground and glared at the flat ceiling. He didn’t know why he couldn’t sleep. He’s tired, yes; his eyes were even drooping, stinging. But his mind was up to something. He tilted his head to look past Jane's room. There wasn’t a sign of life in there. In fact, the silence pounding in his ears was deafening. It was ironic that he was the first one who entered his room, yet he’s still wide awake. Making his hands a pillow, he sighed.‘Should I draw Blame again?’ he thought but once he caught a glimpse of the canvas piling in r

Busted
For the whole week, Z had to explain why and how she was transferred to both the teachers and the Shadowests. She told them that the test had some kind of glitch. The headmaster reassessed it himself and found that Z was really a Skipper. It was becoming irksome for her to hear others fire repeated questions, finding it a lot harder to rephrase, “Yes, it’s a shit but I’m over it now.” Just so they would know that she held no grudge with the issue at hand. But Shadowests have a way of questioning her, especially that she was famous in the first place. In particular, the Nobles have formed in groups to corner Z in the Hall. They were curious and disappointed at the same time. The ones with unforgettable expressions were Sloane and Karina. Sloane pretended that any space occupied by Z was nothing but a wasted one. Karina, meanwhile, merely smiled at her, though the sadness was apparent in her eyes. This and the fact that they’re not mi
