Why was Nicholas deserving of such profound gratitude? It couldn't just be the act of offering him employment and shelter. That alone wouldn't be enough reason for someone to claim they owe their life to him.

Besides, this place felt more like a prison than a comfortable abode. Living here for an extended period couldn't be anyone's idea of a blissful life. Perhaps Nicholas had saved him from committing suicide? Yes, that could be it, I speculated.
