Darlington Briggs:

My father quickly let go of Amara's hand and turned to face his wife. "Ifeoma, what has gotten into you? Don't you see that Amara looks sad? It's only right that I ask her what Darlington did to you."

My mother frowned and descended the stairs. She wore a green flowing gown and replied, "Whatever Darlington did to Amara is not my concern. You shouldn't be holding her arm and that's my only complaint."

"Good evening, Mom," I greeted my mother, assuming that she was jealous of the scene before her. If not for the fact that Amara and I share a bedroom, my mother would have thought my father truly married Amara for himself.
