Suvi’s POV
“I’ve already told you, Miss Merdock. The hotel is fully booked. We simply don’t have a spare room for your poodle.” I plaster a smile on my face. This is the third time Miss Merdock has been to the front desk in the past twenty minutes. As a front desk worker at the Green Tree Hotel, I’m used to difficult guests. But Miss Merdock is a whole new level of difficult!
“Surely you can do something.” She rolls her eyes. Her poodle, Mr. Flufferoos is under her arm like a football. “Or should I take this to the manager?”
It’s a threat. Whenever they mention the manager, it’s to bully me into getting what they want. I scan the computer screen. The only room left is the penthouse suite. She clicks her nails on the counter. “I’m waiting,” she says.
“As a matter of fact, I do have a room for Mr. Flufferoos,” I sigh. I can’t believe I’m giving our best room to a poodle. I hand her the key. As soon as she’s out of sight, I put my head in my hands.
It’s been an emotionally draining day. I can’t wait to get home. Just then, my phone buzzes.
It’s Josh.
Instantly, my mood perks up.
“Hello?” I answer, unable to suppress my smile.
“Suvi? It’s Josh,” he says in that velvety tone of his. “Is this a bad time?”
“Oh no,” I say. “Not at all. Just finishing up work. And…”
“Great.” He cuts me off. “Look, I’d like you to come to dinner with me.”
That was blunt. I’m a bit taken aback. “Dinner? Like, as in a date?”
He’s silent for a moment. “Yes, Suvi. I would like to take you on a date.”
Oh boy. A date? I haven’t been on a date in ages. I start to list all the reasons why I shouldn’t accept. He’s rich: I’m poor. He’s young: I’m not. He’s famous: I work the front desk at a small hotel. He’s the Alpha’s son. My wolf is in hiding.
Then there’s my abusive past….
No. I can’t.
“Suvi? You there?” he asks.
I sigh deeply.. He’s sexy. He’s handsome. He’s sweet. He’s way out of my league. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, Josh,” I finally confess. What would be the point?
“I think it’s a wonderful idea,” he quips. “It’s just dinner, Suvi. It’s not like I’m asking you to marry me. Come on. You’ve got nothing to lose here. Just share a nice meal with me.”
Well…how can I argue with that?
We set a date a week from now. Then of course I spend the entire week fussing and fretting about the date….

I walk into the restaurant, holding Myla’s hand. I hadn’t intended on bringing her, but a last minute work emergency called Lucinda away. She’s a hair stylist and one of her rich clients had a ‘hair catastrophe.’
“So sorry, Suvi,” she said, rushing out the door. “Money’s extra tight this month. I gotta take whatever jobs I can get.”
I put on Myla’s pretty dress. The only pretty dress she has.
“Now remember,” I whisper to her. “Mommy needs Myla to be on her very best behaviour. Okay?”
Myla nods, her face serious. “Yes, Momma.”
I spot Josh. He waves at me, then he sees Myla. For a second, my stomach lurches. What if he doesn’t like kids? What if he’s mad I brought her? But instead he stands and waves again.
“And who might this be?” he asks, smiling sweetly at Myla.
“Myla,” she says shyly.
“Well, Myla, my name is Josh.” He holds out his hand for her to shake. She giggles and shakes it. “And I’m so glad your mom brought you here tonight. Did you know that this restaurant has the best chocolate cake in the whole wide world?” Myla’s eyes grow wide.
“It does?” she asks.
“Oh, but you probably don’t like chocolate cake, do you?” His tone is teasing.
“Yes. Yes I do,” she nods.
“Well then. Chocolate cake for dinner!”
My heart melts. It literally melts. Who is this man? It took him all of two minutes to win over my daughter. So much so, that she wants to sit on his lap. He happily plunks her down on his knee. This is surreal. There’s gotta be a catch. Some sort of red flag.
No one is this perfect.
But he is. He really is. We have a wonderful dinner together. We sip wine and eat fabulous food – expensive food – food I haven’t had in a really long time. And we chat. The conversation flows easily and casually. By the time the meal is over, I’m more relaxed than I’ve been in months.
And it feels fantastic.
As we’re leaving the restaurant, I accidentally roll my ankle on the door frame. I stumble, but Josh catches me. A strange, warm feeling rushes through me.
“Easy there,” he says, looking me dead in the eyes. His hands are on my hips. Our lips are very close. He looks like he’s going to kiss me.
I’m not sure how I feel about that. It’s been so long since I’ve kissed someone. This is all happening really fast. My mind is spinning. My heart is racing. I’m having a hard time breathing. He leans in closer.
And then…
“Momma,” Myla interrupts. She begins to sob.
“I think she’s overtired,” I say, picking her up. “I should get her home.” I smile awkwardly at Josh. He nods and smiles back.
“Of course,” he says. “Thank you for a wonderful evening.” He squeezes my hand and the warm feeling rushes through me again. Then he walks away. But before he’s around the corner, he turns back to look at me.
He flashes me a half-smile and gives me a quick nod. Then he stuffs his hands in pockets and walks away.
My thoughts are all jumbled by the time I get home. If Myla hadn’t interrupted us…would I have let him kiss me?
“Suvi? Is that you?” Lucinda calls from the living room.
“Yeah…I…”
“Come here. Right now! You gotta see this!” There’s something about her tone that I don’t like…something foreboding.
I rush to the living room. The news is on. Lucinda places her hand on my shoulder.
“I’m sorry, Suvi,” she says. Then she points at the TV. “It’s been all over the news.”
“What has?” I whip my head to the TV. I see a picture of Josh. With another woman. They’re standing close together.
“Breaking news,” the news anchor says while pictures of Josh and the woman flash across the backdrop. “Famous race car driver, Josh, will marry his fiancée, Brooke Vanderin, in one month’s time! The official announcement was made earlier today by his very own father, Alpha Broderick.”
The color drains from my face.
Fiance?
Marry?
In a month?
Josh’s POV“I don’t NEED a fiancé!” I try to keep my voice down, my emotions under control. But my father is interfering in my life! Again! This isn’t the first time we’d had this talk. And I have a sinking feeling it wasn’t going to be the last. My father has been pressuring me for a while now to get engaged. I clench my fists, trying to push back my anger.“Be reasonable, Josh,” he says in a steady, calm tone. “You can’t succeed me without a mate.”“You don’t think I know that?” I snap at him. He reminds me almost every day! “But why are you forcing Brooke on me? Let me choose my own mate!”“Brooke is the mate Luna Crestina has chosen for you,” he calmly states. My eyes flick to Luna Crestina. She’s standing calmly in the corner, watching us argue.I take a deep breath and run my hands through my hair. “Luna Crestina, I thank you. I really do. For your ‘kindness’.” I try to cover the sarcasm in my voice but it leaks out. “But I really don’t need your help with this.”“Brooke is a ver
Suvi’s POVJosh is standing outside my door. What the? I sigh. I just had a long day at work and just want to unwind with Myla. He’s called me a few times since our dinner, but I haven’t picked up. What’s the point? He has a fiancé! I have a nice, peaceful life with Myla and Lucinda. I want to keep it that way.“You haven’t returned my calls,” he says as I approach. I fumble for my keys in my purse. I don’t want to talk to him. He should have told me about his fiancé. “I was worried,” he continues.Damn, he’s cute. Dark denim jeans. Black leather jacket. Shining green eyes. And his tousled brown hair falling over his forehead.‘No, Suvi,’ I scold myself. He wasn’t honest with you. He’s getting married!“No need to be worried,” I say dismissively. “As you can see, I’m perfectly fine.”Except that I’m not. I really enjoyed our dinner together. For a brief moment, I allowed myself to think that maybe…just maybe…“Can we talk?” he asks. He’s standing between me and the door. Not in an agg
Suvi’s POV“Suvi?” Josh says into the mike, still looking at me. “Will you come on down here?”“Holy crap,” Lucinda says under her breath.“Momma?” Myla asks.I’m frozen to the spot. Everyone in the booth is looking at me. Did he just say…his mate? And MARRY?“Go on,” Lucinda says, practically shoving me out of the booth. “I’ll take care of Myla. This is so friggin’ exciting! You have to go!”I leave the booth and walk down the stands, in a complete daze. The cameras find me and my face is plastered all over the big screens.Me. Suvi. I don’t…I don’t understand. He waves me over. I walk towards the podium. I’m pretty sure my heart is going to pound right out of my chest. I stand beside him, nervous. All these people…looking at me.Is this really happening? He takes my hand and gives it a big squeeze.Warmth floods through me. His presence is calming. Secure. For a moment, I almost forget that I’m standing in front of hundreds of people. “Everyone, I’d like you to meet my mate!”His
Suvi’s POV“You didn’t!” Lucinda exclaims, clamped her hand over her mouth. Lucinda had been waiting for me at home, anxiously. “You turned him down? Josh? You actually turned down a famous race car driver? A future Alpha? Are you drunk?”I know Lucina’s just joking. I’d told all about my little meeting with Josh in his private room. She’s teasing me now.Because it DID sound crazy! On paper, sure, Josh sounds perfect. He’s all those things…rich, famous, next in line for Alpha. And more! You can add sweet, kind, generous, great with kids…The list of Josh’s qualities is long.Plus, I bet he’s one hell of a kisser. But Lucinda knows me better than anyone. She loves me more than anyone. She’s worried about my feelings, too. She’s just trying to make light of serious situations. It’s her style. Cover it up with humor.Deep down, she’s just as concerned as I am that I’ll get hurt.“He has a fiancé!” I point out. “The whole time he was flirting with me, he was engaged. Still is, as far as I
Josh’s POVHer face floods my mind as I return to the pack house. There’s just something about her smile. Something about the way she holds herself.I know she has reservations. I don’t blame her! She’s wolfless and a single mom. That’s gotta be rough. But she’s strong. Resilient. Smart and independent. She’d be a wonderful Luna, even without a wolf.“Joshua, we need to talk.” A mindlink from my father. His voice is stern. Great, I sigh. I know exactly what he wants to ‘talk’ about. “I’m in my study,” he adds.“Coming,” I mindlink back. Then I trudge down the hall towards his study. No use in postponing the inevitable. My father wastes no time. He gets right to the point.“That’s quite the little stunt you pulled, Joshua.” He’s sitting at his desk, his brows furrowed. “Needless to say, I am not impressed.”“I didn’t think you would be,” I scoff sarcastically.“How could you?” my father asks. “You publicly humiliated us! Refusing to marry Brooke? On national television? Do you have any
Suvi’s POVI go to work as usual. I’m a little worried at first that someone will recognize me. From the TV. I don’t want any attention. But no one does. That’s the beauty of living in the slums. No one pays attention to the news or other celebrity stuff. For the first time in my life, I’m actually grateful that I live in the slums. It’s a pretty normal shift. I sign in some guests, send out some ‘Thanks for staying with us’ emails. The hotel is pretty quiet. But near the end of my shift, the door swings open and a woman waltzes in.Her red curls. Her designer clothes. The way she walks with a confidence that only comes from money and status.I recognize her immediately.Brooke.Josh’s fiancé.She walks right up to the desk and eyes me up and down.“Can I help you?” I ask. I have no idea why she’s here, but I assume it’s not to book a room. She clicks her tongue. “So you’re Josh’s mate,” she says. “I have to admit, I was expecting something a little…how do I say this? Wolfier?”I fig
Suvi’s POVI hold Myla’s hand as the ambulance rips through the streets. ‘Faster,’ I whisper under my breath. We pull up to the best hospital in the pack.Josh rushes towards me.“What happened? What’s wrong?” They whirl Myla down the hall on a stretcher. Her face is pale, which accentuates the blood on her chin.“I don’t know,” I say, chasing after the stretcher. We get to two large doors. They swing open.A doctor is scrubbing up. My heart sinks. It’s an operating room. I try to go inside but a nurse blocks my path.“I’ve very sorry, miss, but you can’t come in here.”Can’t come in? But that’s my daughter! My heart! My world! My words come out in a frantic jumble. “I have to. Please. I can’t…”Josh takes my hand. “Suvi,” he says. “She’s in good hands. The BEST hands. Let them do what they need to do.”I look into his eyes. A calmness washes over me. He’s right. There’s nothing I can do.Josh leads me back to the waiting room. Lucinda is pacing. When she sees me, she runs over.“I’m s
Suvi’s POVWe arrive at the pack house. Josh is carrying Myla. I instantly see the gap between Josh and me. I knew it was there, the gap. He’s rich; I’m not. He’s famous; I’m nobody. But KNOWING there’s a gap and SEEING it are two entirely different things. The pack house is beautiful. Swanky. High end everything. All gleaming marble and shiny finishings. Plus it’s huge. It takes us a few minutes just to cross the foyer! It even smells good. Like lavender. It’s a far cry from my crappy apartment in the slums. I suddenly feel very self-conscious. Josh leads me down the hall into a private room.“It’s a guest room,” he explains, placing Myla gently on the four poster bed.A guest room? It’s the size of our entire kitchen/living room area. This is Josh’s world. I see it clearly now.And his world is SO far from mine. He tucks Myla into the covers, covers that probably cost more than I make in a week. I’m clutching her suitcase, unsure of what to do with it. It doesn’t belong in here, he
