As if Lucas had never truly understood Chelsey.

Lucas shut his eyes, his throat now choked up. It took him a second to find his voice again. "Have you … ever loved me?"

Chelsey was stunned by Lucas' question.

Chelsey had been thoroughly wounded by Lucas. She didn't want to talk about love anymore.

With a curl of her lip, she said, "I told you, Lucas. I married you to repay you for saving my life. Now that I've taken care of you for three years in exchange, we're even."

"So you've never loved me, right?" Lucas asked, still holding onto hope. He wanted to hear Chelsey's answer for himself, whether it was a yes or a no.

Chelsey straightened up and said, "Yes, I've never loved you."

"I understand. We'll get divorced tomorrow. Remember to bring all the necessary documents," Lucas said.

He smiled bitterly before saying in an earnest tone, "Thank you for taking care of me and tolerating me for three years. From now on, you can live the life you desire."
