CHAPTER 22

I was frozen in place for a few seconds in shock. Riley was standing there, her face was covered in dirt and her hair was matted like fur.

But with all the bruises and dirt on her she still had a smile on her face.

“Good to see you, C” she said weakly.

I sprung alive and ran to hug my best friend. I just held her there willing the tears away as they threatened to spill but I knew she wouldn't like that.

“Oh my Goddess, I can't believe it. I can't believe it….” I said touching her face and checking all over her body for any injuries.

“You better believe it,” she said with a smile and winced immediately at the gesture.

“Oh– I uh– please come in. Let me take care of you” I said, taking her hand and leading her into the house.

“It's okay, C. Just show me a room and I'll freshen up” she said.

I looked at her with a tender smile on my face. She was always such a brave one. And she never liked it when she was put in a position where she couldn't help herself.
