Chapter Thirteen

Athan’s POV.

After a few minutes since I last moved, Hunter moves his bishop to b5. I hold in a smirk as I realize that he plans on capturing my knight that protects my king to do checkmate.

“How is the DarkShadow pack?” Hunter asks, trying to take my mind off our chess match.

“Same old,” I answer him nonchalantly as I move my bishop to block his attack. “Although, Alpha Caleb did complain about the rogues roaming in our area.”

“The rogues in Crescent Valley are difficult to contain,” He chuckles. “But I do my best to restrain them.” He moves his pawn to create a false opening.

“I suggest working harder.” I tell him while not falling for his obvious bait, “The region sells you slaves to guarantee that. And, I am transferred here to ensure that.” I clear my throat to make it less than a threat.

Hunter doesn’t seem like he took offence at what I said. He simply moves his rook and laughs, “I know, Athan.” He looks at me and I stop myself from growling when I see a mischievous look spark
