Athan’s POV.
I walk out of the Red Zone with my fists closed tightly. I don’t understand why Ice didn’t accept my rejection. I’ve been treating her like a daughter, I can’t believe she harbors such nasty feelings for me. But then again, I don’t understand the intentions of the Moon Goddess to have Ice as my second chance mate. Is this her way of making up for everything that she takes from me? The thought makes me chuckle bitterly.
Ice will never be Isabella, my eternal love.
“Master! Wait up!” Flix catches up with me from the corner of the aisle. He was a student of mine but now he shoulders the responsibility as a trainer. I am proud of him being my right-hand man like a Beta. However, I don’t really want to interact with anyone after being in that incident with Ice. I am too angry for this.
“What do you want?” I ask without looking at him and head towards my office. He quickly updates me with some news flying around the pack next door, mainly about the dangers lurking in the Crescent Valley.
“Alpha Caleb of the Darkshadow Pack wants to meet with you regarding the rogues that have been found roaming around the territory. And his Beta asked if tomorrow afternoon will be a good time?” He asks for my opinion while putting his notepad facedown.
Honestly, before I make my side of the street clean, I don’t want to see anyone any time soon. Especially Caleb. The annoying old guy who is either asking for military backup from me or too keen to play matchmaker. But the situation is dire thanks to those annoying mutts.
“You know my calendar, Flix.” I resign, pausing on my track and reply dryly, “You tell me.”
With a sheepish look, he flips through a few pages on his notepad and answers, “You are scheduled to speak with the Omega representative tomorrow morning, but other than that, you are free.”
“Then send the confirmation of attendance.” I tell him as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“Anything else?” After a few seconds, I wait for him to utter something else because usually he would leave immediately. As a First Upper Moon Warrior in the academy, the title and the responsibility are heavy.
He clears his throat a few times while closing his notepad. “Master, I would like to talk about Ice-”
“No. I don’t want to talk about her.” I stop him abruptly and walk towards my seat in the office.
“Master, I...” He stutters. “I don’t know for sure why she did what she did, but Ice would never humiliate you like that. You know that!”
He doesn’t know that I and Ice are mates, which means that he doesn’t know that I rejected her during the Coming-of-Age Ball. Her response to thrashing the whole place was completely valid and not unreasonable. But still, she is not Isabella. I will never love her.
“But she did. End of story.” I shrug him off.
“But Master!” He calls out.
Now I’m really annoyed. I glare at him. Normally, he would simply tuck his tail between his feet and avoid my gaze as he tries to change the topic because he is afraid of me as his boss. But to my surprise, he doesn’t back down this time.
“It was a set up, or she was probably drugged! She’s innocent!” He gulps loudly. Out of all the years he has worked for me, Flix has never tried to stand up against me. Ever.
Seeing him this passionate about Ice irks something inside of me. An infuriated smirk crawls up before I slap him across his face.
Flix stumbles on the ground and stares up at me with pure terror. I cannot blame him because I would never hurt my employees. Never. But how dare he care for my mate?!
The same mate I rejected.
Frustrated, I hold my temper and pull myself together. He is innocent.
“Don’t forget rule 101, be emotionless.” I grab his collar and look at him in the eyes, “Emotionless, Flix. Or else it will affect your judgement.” Like how it affected me a few moments ago.
“Athan, put that young man down.” A familiar voice sounds from behind me.
I take orders from nobody. Not even from the Alpha of the Darkshadows pack due to reasons I don’t want to disclose. Not yet. My true identity will remain secret until I achieve what I want. But since Flix is here, I follow Caleb’s command and let Flix go.
“Go to your quarters.” Caleb tells him kindly. “Forgive your master. He’s just having his time of the month.” He jokes.
Despite Caleb’s humor, Flix shakes his head as he waits for my order, not following his command. Because although Caleb is an Alpha, Flix answers to me.
“Go.” I wave him off.
“Yes, Master.” He mutters silently and rushes out of my office the fastest I’ve ever seen him do it.
“What are you doing here? I thought you wanted to meet up tomorrow?” I face Caleb and ask.
“I’m not here for official Pack Affairs, Athan.” Caleb crosses his arms with a shrug while taking a seat on the couch. Then why is he here? Realization dawns on me when I see the mischievous sparkle in his eyes. He knows. An Ultimate fan of tidbits.
“This is ridiculous. How did you know?” I scoff, even the students in the academy are ill-informed. They just thought Miss Ice attempted to seduce me last night and thus was thrown into the dungeon.
“I take that it’s true then? Ice is your second chance mate?” He smiles playfully.
“Whose loose tongue must I cut?” I grit my teeth.
“How I got the information is irrelevant, Athan. You rejected her, didn’t you? That is why she threw a tantrum last night?” He deflects from my questions and rolls his eyes as if I was being overdramatic.
“Just leave me alone.” I furiously stand up.
“Athan, it’s been twelve years since she passed away. It’s time to move on. Ice is a nice girl.” He sighs, shaking his head. “She’s good enough for you.”
“I rejected her.” I say coldly.
“We all know Ice,” He shrugs his shoulders. “She has had affections for you for ages. She will not accept your rejection.”
As much as I don’t like admitting it, what he is saying might be true. I have always noticed her glances and her sudden blushes before. For the longest time, I keep on telling myself that it was just because she’s being shy. I guess it’s something else.
My gaze moves to the picture that is quietly lying in my drawer. My Isabella was everything to me. But way too soon she was made to take her place amongst the Moon Angels. And now, the Moon Goddess wants to play some type of joke where she gives me Ice, Isabella’s substitute, as my mate? In spite of having similar features to Isabella as she also has a rare white wolf, Ice is not Isabella. She will never be her.
Locking my drawer, I decide to do some actual work to ignore Caleb.
“You have to let her go.” His voice sounds again.
“I won’t. Not until she accepts my rejection.”
“Is there no other way?” He asks while leaning closer.
”None.”
A brief pause lingers between us, before he breaks it with a ridiculous suggestion. “Unless she completes the Impossible Mission.”
“Caleb.” I pause to look up at him. Has he finally lost his mind?
He avoids my gaze and continues, “As written in your rulebook, if the prisoner held in the Red Zone does not obey your condition to leave, then the only other alternative for them to be released is if they take on and succeed in doing the Impossible Mission.”
“She’s doomed to die.” I mutter silently. The mission is regarded as impossible because its difficulty can be fatal. I am unsure if her current level can manage that. I know every bit of her, after all, she’s brought up by me.
“Then so be it.” He says nonchalantly. “At least give her the option that grants her to choose her fate rather than make her rot with pain and humiliation.”
I look out through the window. Would this actually be a good thing? Whatever fate she will face after accepting the Impossible Mission will be beneficial for me. If she succeeds, then she will be forced to leave the Crescent Valley and marry somebody else happily. And if she doesn’t, then she will either remain in the Red Zone forever until she accepts the rejection. Either option will eliminate any existence of second chances. After all, my heart died the same day my Isabelle did twelve years ago.
I will never forgive the death of my beloved. I will take revenge on Moon Goddess in my own way.
Looking at my old friend’s eyes, I ask. “Do you have any target in mind?”
Ice’s POVI jolt awake with a loud gasp as I am splashed by cold water. Despite having my body ache all over due to the batter I’ve received in the past few days, I open my surely swollen eyes just to glare at whoever woke me up.The guard’s gray dull eyes lock into mine and he disgustingly spits on me, “Stand up, whore.”“I swear to the Moon Goddess, Gil. Once I get out of these chains, I will dunk you in the river found on the outskirts of the town.” I sneer as I give him my infamous death glare.“You better shut your mouth while I’m still playing nice. I might just end you right now.” He grunts as he moves closer to me, giving off a stale smell of sweat from his clothes covered with layer upon layer of grime. “Such empty words.” I scoff. He’s about to say something but suddenly changes his mind and leaves the prison room.Smirking to myself for still having my reputation, I grab the dirty bread on the floor and put it into my mouth. I really should not trigger him, it’s not his fa
Sauntering into the main banquet hall, I let my eyes wander around the place. The stargazing dome somehow creates a mellow atmosphere at the moment. But what’s saddening is this is where he rejected me at the Coming-of-Age Ball the day before yesterday.“I am here as you have ordered, Master.” Brushing the worries away, I look at him straight in the eyes with a seductive gaze.Something flashes across his face, but before I can figure out what it is, it vanishes as fast as it appeared.“Take a seat, if you please.” he observes, stoically. And I do so.I fix my stature and glance at the food in front of me. I almost give out a small gasp because of the quality and amount of dishes that are served for us today. Roasted turkey, grilled salmon, and seared steak were simply some of the food on the table. There’s even caviar. They’re too many and too fancy for just the both of us.“Are we supposed to be waiting for anyone?” The question rolls off my tongue without hesitation, making me forg
A ray of sunshine passes through the window and wakes me up. Groaning, I place my hand on top of Master Athan’s chest to cuddle with him, except I am greeted with a soft pillow rather than his warm body. I open my eyes and frown at the empty bed.I took him against his will last night, of course he would not want to cuddle. However, I can’t help myself from blushing when thinking of what happened last night. Me and Master, connected into one. As mates.Despite being in cloud nine, something, somewhere in the back of my mind, is screaming for a reality check. I will be departing soon for my Impossible Mission, which is to assassinate the Rogue King by any means. I suppose the most efficient way to do it is to seduce him. After sharing my whole soul with the Master, I find it unacceptable to have sex with another man.Sitting up from the bed, my silky chemise slips down to my waist. My heart pounds with a mixture of pain and worry. Would Master truly let me proceed with sleeping with a
Athan’s POV.I take a sip of my coffee and gaze out at the arena from my training shed built exclusively for me. Covered with vibrant green grass in the middle and an orange oval running track surrounding it, I am quite pleased to see that it is put into good use. My students are doing their daily drills that help them master the art of endurance and discipline.I like having my personal space, but my students know better than to keep their questions to themselves. Which is why if they have questions, they need to jog half a mile towards me from the arena. Some might think that the whole process is inefficient, but they are blatantly wrong. Half a mile is child’s play for us werewolves. Besides, that extra distance is good for their speed.A group of students purposely jog to where I am just to greet me to which I returned. Another group of students asks me a question on how to shift faster. Another asks about ways to polish their combat skills. See? Everything is running smoothly.I
Ice’s POV.Although sweat covers my whole body, the blazing heat from the sun prickles my skin. Damn, it’s like I’m boiling to death. On the day I left the academy, I cried my heart out while forcing my wolf to accept that her mate is an ass. On the second day, I turned off all my emotions, muffled my wolf’s wobbly cries, and focused on planning on how to get my job done: killing the Rogue King.I travelled over to the next town because it will be easier to track down the Rogue King in a place where my identity is unknown. I picked up on his norms and patterns. He often visits this town with the sole purpose of purchasing slaves. The best way for a predator to approach you is to become a prey. I have learned that the slave traders he often buys from traffic helpless beautiful ladies on the streets. For this reason, I offered myself on a silver platter to be abducted by sleeping peacefully in the street where the bargaining market begins. And it works. I’m currently in one of the cages
Ice’s POV.“The fresh meats are here.” A high-pitched whistle catches the crowd’s attention. With Kelly near me, the group of girls I am with are shoved inside the auction house where the smell of expensive booze hits my nose. There are gorgeous girls coquetting all over the place with huge and sparkly gems as pendants in their necklace. We have yet to discuss what happened earlier on the day. Of how I was saved and whether Alpha Athan was the one who saved me. We’ve taken heavy casualties. Poor Visha is so traumatized that her eyes were devoid of life. Even Kelly begs me not to talk about the incident.I let out a small grunt as we are led to a back room to strip and change our outfit to thongs. I swallow the bile on my throat that is threatening to come out as I try to calm Kelly down.“I don’t want to strip naked,” She mutters with tears on her eyes. “I… I can’t.”“We have to.” I hold her shoulders and tell her firmly. I take my shirt off me and pull my pants down. She nods in defe
Ice’s POV.Gathering my conscious back, I frown when I hear loud moans and lapping sounds in front of me. I don’t need my eyes to know that someone is someone. I have no problem people doing their own business, I just wish that they had the decency to get their own room.Opening my eyes, I am not shocked to see a pretty girl with porcelain skin and golden hair pleasing a huge man with tattoos all over him. I assume he is the Rogue King. My eyes drift downwards and I'm more surprised to see that his physique matches his package. The girl groveling in front of him, doing her best to get his attention. Unfortunately powerful people have the tendency to be assholes. Apparently he does not seem pleased, at all.My gaze shifts to the two people behind him. The man is informing him about his schedules for the week with a pad on his hand, which reminds me of Flix. The woman, on the other hand, stands beside him with a stern look in her face and her muscles bulge out with her arms crossed in f
Ice’s POV.“I’m so far away from home.” I mutter silently, wrapping the poncho tighter as I watch the wind blows the sand around us. Kelly and I are enjoying our dinner outside the palace grounds.According to her, Desert Heart is located in the Middle East of the continent. If my calculations are correct, then I am roughly ten thousand miles away from the Crescent Valley. Desert Heart has extremely low humidity at night. If it was not for the slaves that are fanning us, then I would break a sweat. But pushing aside the uncomfortable weather, the view is breathtaking. Dull golden sands map all around us with hints of cactus instead of trees. I have only visited the Middle East once. It was for a mission where I had to take care of a business named Amun, who also happened to be the previous leader of one of the biggest crime syndicates in the world. It was a quick job though. “Huh, I never get to ask where you are coming from.” Kelly asks while propping an elbow on the table. “I take
