George didn’t stop breathing. He didn’t stop trying. He didn’t pause. He didn’t freeze. He didn’t make any indication that he heard me. He was still as calm as ever. I was confused.

“I said I’m pregnant.”

“I heard you the first time.”

So he did hear me. Why was he acting like he didn’t then? “Why aren’t you saying anything?”

“What do you mean?”

“Again, I heard you. I’m just wondering why you’re telling me this piece of information.”

My mouth dropped open. What the fuck was that even supposed to mean? There was only one reason I was telling him and I didn’t think he was that dense that he wouldn’t know why. He finally stopped typing again, then stood up to round his table.

He leaned back on the table, folded his arms across his chest, and stared at me. “Why did you come all the way here to tell me that you’re pregnant?”
