44. Cold and elusive

I stood in front of the building I’d been working in a month ago. My feet were rooted in place and I couldn’t find it in me to move at all.

I was scared of what was going to happen when I finally walked in and told George the news. Would he even listen to me? Would he think I was lying? Just a few days ago, I’d told him I didn’t want anything to do with him and here I was, standing in front of his company, too afraid to go in.

“Abigail?” A hesitant voice called out and I turned around, instantly plastering a smile on my face. “I thought that was you,” Zara said warmly. “What are you doing here? I thought you quit?”

I nodded. “I came to clear out my desk.”

I was one month late but that sounded like the best excuse I could give.

“Mr. Galanti already cleared it out, but the box is in your former office though.”

I bit my bottom lip, nodding again. How eager was he to get me out of his life that he went through the trouble of clearing out my desk for me? “I’ll go and get
