Chapter 63When we entered the dining room, all the generals were seated at the table eating and talking amongst themselves. They went quiet for a minute and I got the sense that they were probably debating the innocence of the suspects we had questioned.“Go on please, don't stop your chatting on our behalf,” I said pleasantly as Arnou wheeled me into an open space beside his seat.Gemma was the first person to speak up. She gave me a genuine smile and said loudly.“Well, I think Nikkini should be given the worst punishment possible for ruining your dress. That alone is worthy of punishment,”“Honestly. I get that she hates you but ruining your wedding dress, come on that's a step too far,” Rabira said in agreement.I agreed with them but I didn't show any signs of my personal feelings on the matter.I was still thinking about Alisa and how she had called Herley’s attempt on my life a petty grudge.Arnou picked up a plate and began to heap some food into it for me.I scrunched my eye
Chapter 64We all sat waiting in anticipation for the witness Nikkini claimed she had. When I asked her the name of the maid, she was unable to tell me. That’s understandable; I too don’t know the name of all the maids in the palace.Luckily she was able to explain the maid’s features and tell us that the girl was a kitchen maid.Herley didn’t seem rankled at the fact that Nikkini had a witness who had seen them together. She seemed quite smug.“Arnou, do you know who exactly Nikkini described?” I asked him in a quiet voice as I tried to piece together a reason for Herley’s smugness.“I have an idea who it is but I can’t be sure,” He whispered back.I began to panic as the guards with the maid arrived at the meeting room and their entrance was announced.“Arnou who?” I demanded in a quiet panic.“Here she is,” He replied as the doors to the meeting room opened up and two guards entered hauling a small figure between them. She seemed familiar and I squinted my eyes trying to figure out
Chapter 65“Eden, both you and Nikkini are guests I invited for my wedding. She is your wife and you both share a room. Tell me, how often have the both of you been together since yuu on arrived in the lycan territory,” I questioned calmly.Eden looked at Nikkini with a questioning look before giving his answer. I purposely worded my question in such a way that he would not realize the trap until it was too late.“Um, we spend time together but I swear I wasn’t with her when she poisoned the dress,” Eden said with his head bowed.“I didn’t ask y out if you were present at the crime, I asked you how often the both of you are together,”“We do spend a lot of time together,” Eden replied meekly. I smiled pleased at his response.“Your wife spends a lot of time with you so when exactly do you guys get separated?” I asked Eden the question but it was Herley that replied.“Arnou, is this really necessary? What does their personal relationship have to do with this investigation? Nikkini al
“Alisa I don’t see why you think you deserve the same punishment. Do I need to remind you that this woman tried to kill me?” I asked Alisa incredulously with hurt in my voice.I felt so pained because Alisa and I had grown incredibly close recently and I thought of her as the sister I never had.“But it wasn’t proven that she worked with Nikkini,” Alisa whispered with tears streaming down her eyes.“Please,”“Alisa, be truthful. Just the fact that she’s a suspect and both Eden and Alisa testified against her makes it a probability. And you supporting her even in a potential situation is very hurtful to me. So please stop,” I replied to Alisa as I pulled my arm back from her.She nodded tearfully and returned to her seat.“That’s it?! Alisa, are you really not going to fight more for me? “ Herley cried out in a hurt voice.Alisa sniffled but didn’t reply to Herley. It warmed my heart, despite how much she loved Herley, she was taking my side.“Really? No one? Somebody, please say some
Chapter 67I sat in my bathtub and watched my maids attempt to bath me without causing me much pain.I sniffed, and Arnou looked at me angrily. He had been acting like a wolf in heat, refusing to leave my side for a single second. His presence was making my maids nervous and our usually chatty bath time was silent.I was running a fever and it's because of the stress today. After the meeting, I mistakenly let Herley and Arnou in on the fact that I was still in pain.I had honestly thought, the pain would get better with time. But at the end of the day, I felt even worse than I had at the beginning. My entire body ached and I couldn't bear to be touched.Arnou had yelled in anger, in a voice so loud, Granny had come running. Within a few minutes, they had transported me from the meeting room to my chambers.I know Arnou is still angry I lied to him, this morning. But I had to. If I had told him the true extent of the pain I was feeling this morning, he would never have let me do the in
I lay on my bed with my eyes closed. Sleep hadn't come to lull me away yet and the events of the day kept running through my mind.I heard the sound of my door opening and I opened one eye to see who it was that had come into my room.It was Arnou.“How are you feeling now?” he asked softly.I sighed and sat up gently.“That's all everybody keeps asking me. What am I supposed to say? That I'm not fine?” I replied weakly.Arnou strode towards me softly and began to remove his shirt.“I know, you're not so happy with me because I supported Herley earlier,” Arnou said as he pulled the chair from my dresser and sat beside the bed.“Yeah, I'm not exactly happy about that,” I replied honestly.“But can you make me understand why? I understand that the both of you don't like each other. That's understandable, I mean I don't expect you to like everyone. But what exactly has she done to make you hate her so much?” Arnold asked me carefully.I could tell that he was trying his best not to trig
Chapter 69The next day was a flurry of activity. It felt good to have Arnou on my side, he was an effective worker. Much better than Eden, who used to leave all the tedious work for me.When I woke up sometime in the late morning, Arnou was already up and working. I had watched him for a while before he noticed I was awake. The pain this morning was better. At least I could be touched, but only lightly.Arnou had stood beside me like some guard or soldier to make sure everything went well.He had tasted every food and even the water I drank. I had protested, I mean if it was really poisoned I didn't want him falling sick. He had brushed off my concerns and adamantly tasted all my food items and made me wait five minutes before eating. It was really cute watching him get bothered like that.Arnou and I had been working since morning. Well mostly Arnou, I’ve been sitting on the bed and pestering him for information.I initially wanted to get up do and help in the research but he ada
“You can come in,” I called out in a loud voice. The door pushed open and Gabriel came inside.Arnou shot me an inquisitive look and I smiled at him.“Good afternoon queen of queens. Lycan,” Gabriel greeted with a bow.“Afternoon,” I replied pleasantly.“Do you have the information I requested?” I asked him directly as I motioned for Arnou to pass me a glass of water.“Not entirely, but I have some information. It's all here,” Gabriel said as he reached into his waistcoat pocket and retrieved a piece of paper.I stretched out my hand and he handed me the paper.I frowned as I tried to make sense of his squiggly handwriting.“And what am I supposed to be looking at?” I asked with distaste.“I'm sorry high Luna, I don't know you would request it so soon. I would have written it out clearly,” he apologizedI waved his apology away and tried to read the paper.“So? Did you find out where she's from?” I asked him while I tried to make sense of the information on the piece of paper.“Who?”
