Chapter 9

As she stepped out of the elevator, her mobile began to vibrate inside her bag. She pulled it out and her breath hitched in her throat when she saw the caller ID - it was Lucas.

He had never called her before. Alice nervously bit down on her bottom lip, her hand trembling as she stared at the screen.

"Why is he calling me? Did he return already?" Questions raced through her mind.

"He must have returned," she mumbled to herself, but she didn't answer the call.

Perhaps he had come home and, not finding her, wanted to know her whereabouts. But why now? He had never shown such concern for her before.

Then again, she had never been late getting home before. She was always there with a smile whenever he returned home.

Alice tried to shake off the thoughts that were scaring and panicking her, quickly putting her mobile back into her bag and heading to her room. If she answered his call, he might freak out on her, and she feared she would weaken and run back to him, something she couldn't aff
