Ember's POV

I could hear a pin drop. There was a need for me to find my way out of this place but from the way he was talking, I knew that it was true. My brain was just suddenly processing his words. Why did he truly want me to get married to another person? That was the last thing that I would have imagined that my father would do but I guess it was what it was.

"What do you mean by that?"

He shrugged softly. "That's exactly what I thought too. The problem now is since you have this many people in your life, I want to also benefit from it. It's either you make sure that at least a certain group of people enjoy from you or you make a way so that we can all remember to say a prayer for you."

Now, he wasn't making sense at all. "What do you mean by saying a prayer?"

"We kill you so that no one has to enjoy your goodness. It's really that simple." He answered, leaving me stunned. He was just speaking about death so casually and making me wonder what life even meant to him.
