Chapter 13

Maya's Pov

My first class of the day whiffed by, but all I could think about was the gift box in my bag. It intrigued me. The bell rang but I remained rooted to my seat. While everyone scrambled to get to their next class, I pulled the box out of my bag and pried it open, taking care not to rip the ribbon.

I gasped at what I saw lying inside the box. It was a necklace, with my name on it. The necklace was delicate with tiny strands, resting within the soft velvet box. A gift like this had to be expensive. And then, the intricate cut and personalized design meant he had put some thought into the gift.

I thought about the person who had broken into my locker to leave such a thoughtful gift for me. It was a glaring contrast from the Micah I knew. The Micah I knew wasn’t one for thoughtful gestures. He was mean and crude and entitled. Accepting his gift meant I forgave him for everything he had done to me. I didn’t think I was ready to forgive him anytime soon.

Steeling my resolve, I shut
