George and I knew enough about each other to be considered close, even before we properly got together, so his mother’s words came as a surprise to me.

We’d been married for only two weeks but we were closer than ever and he never once mentioned the fact that the people who raised him weren’t his birth parents.

“You adopted him?” I couldn’t help but ask. I was curious about George’s life.

She nodded and had a faraway look in her eyes. “I must look too young to be the parent of a thirty-year-old.”

I’d always thought that she was awfully young, but I dismissed it thinking she gave birth at an early age. His father, however, was sixty, even if he didn’t look a day over fifty.

“I was twenty-two when I met my husband.” She explained. “We got married the same year we met because he didn’t want to waste too much time and lose me to other men. He always knew what he wanted. I conceived and gave birth the next year.”
