chapter Twenty one
The alarm kept buzzing in my ears non-stop. Damn it! I didn’t want to wake up to this sad reality which happens to be my life. I just needed to escape, and do something else with my life. I needed to pretend. But, as I woke up, gasping for air, I knew that was a long time coming. I pushed my hair out of my eyes, and grabbed the watch. It was exactly 7 am. I was late! I needed to get to college now. A yawn escaped my lips, as I jumped out of the bed, and rushed to the bathroom to clean myself up. There was no proof that someone use the bathroom, which meant that Chloe had not come home last night. I unlocked the tap as I imagined that she had gone to the forest once more, for the dark purpose of hunting and killing werewolves. The pain stabbed at my chest. Thinking about her evil tendencies made it more real that maybe I might be in danger. Yet, I wanted to know if my assumptions were indeed true or I was just plain paranoid. It was important to know these things and understand why p

Chapter Twenty Two
His fingers dug into my skin, grounding me down, and making my heartbeat go up an octave that I hadn’t thought was possible. I found myself looking right at him. I tried to divulge the look in his eyes, but I ended up grasping at nothing, only to feel like I was melting into him. It was beyond ridiculous, but still, intense. He helped me maintain my balance, and slowly his hands fell off my arms and stood at his side. I pushed the stray coils away from my eyes, as I looked away from him. “M…” “What were you thinking, Maya?” He snapped suddenly, swallowing my words. I made a move to say something, but he barely pursed. “You can’t cross the road anymore? What the hell is wrong with you?” He shot on enraged. I looked right at him, my confusion evident in my features. He was literally glaring at me. I couldn’t get it. Why was he talking to me like this. It didn’t make any sense. “L…” “What? Tell me what do you want to say? I’m sure you must have heard the horn of that vehicle, but s

I walked back to the my hostel, feeling so much better. It was so nice to have such a refreshing conversation with Mike. He may be annoying, but I knew I could count on him when push comes to shove, and that gives me immense relief. The shrill sound of my phone brought me out of light-headed thoughts, and I dug into my purse, taking the phone out. Mom was displayed in bold letters across my flat screen, with a smiley face to take the crown. My smile went impossibly huge. “Mom,” I cried, as I swiped the call button. Her laugh was infectious on the other side of the phone. Jeez1 I had missed that laugh. I guess those things never dies down no matter how old one was. “My angel,” she said softly. I took a shaky feet in front of the next, as I turned to my lane. “Mom, I’ve missed you. Tell me, are you eating healthy crunches? I don’t want to hear how much you can’t live without chocolates. They aren’t healthy at all. Focus on taking the healthy crunches. The ones I get you from Walmar

“What do you think of werewolves?” “What?” Chloe snapped in disgust. I shifted awkwardly on the pillows. “I mean, do you read fantasy books? There are a lot of sub-genres on that genre. So, I was just asking. So, do you like werewolf books or vampire books?” I asked calmly. Chloe grabbed a disk, and then proceeded to slot it into the DVD. Her face was artfully imprinted in disgust. I swallowed her, as I watched her. She seemed to be battling with her emotions. “You say a lot of crazy things, Maya. Those things don’t interest me. It’s just gross. There are a lot of intriguing books where you can learn so many amazing things, then why get stuck in some fantasy. The world is hard enough,” she said in distaste. I laughed nervously, trying to mask the pain I was feeling. “Oh, come on Chloe! It’s not that bad. I believe that we all crave to move into another world every once in a while. Like, I had this friend who was obsessed with werewolf books. She imagined to be one at some point, a

The feelings I felt took me by surprise. I haven’t realised that I’ve gotten to this extent of feeling such an intense emotion for Mike. Ian had always been my crush, and since when did I start feeling things for Mike? It took my breath away. His hands touched either side off the wall, trapping me in, and making me breathless. I couldn’t help but look at his lips, and watched the way he bit it. Damn it! The door sprang open, and a figure steeped into the light. It was none other than Mike’s mother. She looked at them immediately, and could see that they were hiding between the wall and the shelf. I swallowed hard, my cheeks growing crimson in embarrassment. Ok, this is not how your potential crush’s mother should walk into you. No! Mike isn’t my potential love interest. He… “Come out of there you two. Hiding won’t help your cause,” she said easily. Mike brought his hands down, and slowly guided me out of the trapped space. Our bodies glided together, and if I thought the heat w

I placed a hand on my tummy in a bid to make the hunger pangs go away. It didn’t do that, instead it grew much worse. My eyes flickered open, as a yawn escaped my lips. Damn! I was so hungry. I stretched my hands over my head, and then, stepped out of the comfort of my bed. My left over snacks sat at the front of my desk. It would do till I got something more edible. I quickly walked over, and grabbed the bunch. I pushed the loads of them at once in my mouth. It was just perfect for me, and made it so much better to eat. Yum! I tossed the wrapper in the trashcan. I needed to see the sun a bit. I’m sure it would make me feel better than ever. I grabbed my jacket from the back of the chair, and walked out of my dorm room. The smell of soap, and laughter filled the air. It was the Saturday, and it was the third day after the emotion outburst in the rain with Mike. I still felt like kissing him, and knowing how his plump lips tasted like. And, that was the weirdest thing ever. I k

I walked into class an hour later, my mind a whirlwind. I was so glad that Ian wasn’t in this class. After what happened the previous day, I didn’t want to see him. It was too much stress, and I was already stressed out. The break he is giving me was very much welcomed. The teacher, a petite lady came in a couple of minutes later, and we said our polite hellos in response. She made herself comfortable and her chair, and I settled for doodling away on my notebook. I was beyond stressed. As I drew some legless objects, I thought about the message that had been harmlessly sent to my phone by a number I didn’t know. No-one knows about me, and the werewolves wouldn’t rile me up even if they don’t like me. There was too much at stake for them. But, was it the hunters? I glared at red coloured shirt in front of me as I doodled furiously. Nothing was making sense at all. I wish all these didn’t have to happen. I want to be able to have a normal life… ‘This is your life now, Maya. You have

I tried to release his grip on my arm, but I couldn’t. His grip was ironclad, and I suddenly felt like my hands will fall off my shoulders. It was the worst experience, and literally terrified me. “Be quiet,” he whispered in my ears. A shiver went through my veins. I couldn’t place the voice, and for a second I wondered if this was how I was going to die. It was the worst possible emotion I could ever feel, and it scared me to death. He pushed me in, sitting me down on a chair. Despite the fact I was a werewolf, I couldn’t make out anything in the room, and that caused me to swallow hard. “You’re a werewolf, behave like one,” Mike’s voice rang in my head. It was like it had the switch to turn on the wolf part of me. I felt the human part of me shrink into my soul, giving way to my wolf abilities. Everywhere suddenly seemed bright. “Relax, if you’re good, I won’t hurt you,” the man said calmly. His voice was coming towards my left, but there was nothing I could do because

I could hear scrambling. “No, you’re not. Where are you?” He demanded. I used my free hand to clean my eyes profusely, like he was here, and would be able to see me. I needed to have some control of my emotions. It was a mistake answering the phone in the first place. “I’m fine, Mike,” I mumbled. More shuffling ensued. “You don’t sound fine, Maya!” He snapped right back. I sighed as I got up, feeling like my legs weighed a ton of bricks. “You’re paranoid. I was watching some rom-com that didn’t feel like comedy at the last minute. It got me teary eyed. This things happen sometimes,” I said as convincing as I could. “I doubt this. You’re sure you’re ok? How come I don’t hear the sounds of an ongoing movie? And, aren’t you in school?” He bombarded me with more questions. I rolled my eyes at him. “Mike, please you can turn to a private investigator to some of the girls in the clan. I’m not in the mood. I will chat you up later. See ya,” I said in a high-pitched voice. “Hold on!” He

“Maya, tell me what really happened when I had called you,” Mike said sternly. I avoided his gaze, as I looked towards the dense overgrowth. I could feel his gaze on me. I was at a loss on what to say. I felt his heavy steps as he approached, which only made me move away from him. “Tell me, what happened,” he demanded fiercely. I turned back towards him, he was two steps away from me. His eyes were soft as he looked at me. I felt like I could rely on him to help me out. I felt so odd thinking about it. “Nothing is wrong. Like I said, it was just a bad timing. I was really emotional because of the movie,” I said stiffly. He gave me a look. “I don’t believe you.” I huffed as I looked away from him. He was making it difficult to keep this charade. I didn’t want him to know anything. I wished he would be in the dark about this whole thing, but it was quite evident that Mike didn’t know how to give up. “Then…” “Don’t say anything other than the truth, Maya. I want to know the truth.
