From the moment that Adrian left my side that night, time decided to go into overdrive.

The night was upon me and, with it, a reminder of the promise I'd made. Just like Kai had told me, he had a room set up beside mine and no one dared to touch it. My parents seemed to love him, but I still couldn't figure that one out.

Why?

Sighing, I got to my feet and belted the soft robe around my body. I wanted an extra layer of protection when dealing with this man because something about him wanted me to drop all my defenses.

And I wouldn't do that.

I rapped softly on his door, and a moment later, he opened it. His eyes roamed over me as if he was trying to devour me. "You're here."

"I pay my debts," I whispered.

His lips parted into a smile. "That you do."

Even his voice was enough to make me doubt my former decisions. "What do you want from me, Kai? I mean, really." I moved into his room and shut the door behind me, taking small steps until I reached his side and could stare up at
