Four years later.
“Mummy, mummy,” the voice of my two boys came through immediately I swung the door to their room open.
“Good morning my cuties, already awake and ready for school?” I ruffled their hair while staring into their cute gray eyes just like Jeffery. They had this notable resemblance of Jeffery, thick lashes, plump lips, and curled hair. They were like the replica of Jeffery. Staring at them I felt completely ecstatic, not wanting to dwell in the past but hold onto my double elation.
“Yes mummy,” they both chorus simultaneously jolting me out of my thoughts.
“I will have Adam drop you guys off today, mummy has an important meeting please,” I pleaded as I glared at Daniel who instantly pouted his face.
“But mummy, I…” Daniel tried to grumble, making those puppy faces but I had to cajole him to give in. I can not afford to miss this meeting, or else Uncle Mark will keep jeopardizing my position.
I squatted to his height.
“Baby, mummy will make it up to you, I promise.”
I turned to David who was busy with his tap.
“Baby aren't you going to miss mummy?”
“Mummy I will miss you,” he instantly tossed his tap on the couch and wrapped his little hands around my body. I hugged him tightly drawing Daniel to the embrace. I felt peaceful holding my two boys in my arms. I'm not going to let anyone or anything come in between us. I fought back tears that were welling in my eyes and kissed their forehead.
“Guess what buddies?” I detached from the warm hug and held their hands.
“What mummy?” they both chorus
“Tomorrow is Grandpa's birthday and there will be a grand party to celebrate.” I could see the excitement in their faces as they both started hollering for joy.
“Yeahhhhh, we are going to see Grandpa!” They continue singing.
“Yes, baby.” I watch as they jubilate, forgetting that I won't be taking them to school. They were Grandpa's favorite, both eagerly wanting to be held by him. Grandpa had grown fond of them, always pestering me to drop them by every weekend, he loved them dearly. I would always catch a glimpse of my grandpa's eyes glistening with tears when I drove to pick them up after the weekend. He had earlier disclosed how he wanted to bond with me before the incident that took away my parents and me. He revealed how my parents had been involved in a car accident twenty-six years ago but when they arrived at the scene, there was no trace of me. He never gave up searching for me, because he knew I was out in the cruel world alone.
“Mummy, Uncle Tobias will be coming right,” Daniel asked, his voice dripping with excitement.
“Of course, yes buddy”
I turn to their nanny Miss Ree.
“Make sure they are okay before they leave for school.”
“Yes, ma.”.
I bade goodbye to my babies and hurried to work. A few minutes drive to the office my phone rang, I brought it out of my bag and a ray of a smile lingered on my face at the sight of the caller.
“Hello beautiful angel, hope your night was fabulous?” Tobias uttered, his voice tinged with a hint of avidness.
“Good morning Tobias, my night was good, how was yours?” I blushed on hearing his voice.
“Mine was nice, how are my two buddies?”
“They are good,” I responded, smiling to myself.
Tobias, the CEO of Holden, has been a good friend since the incident of my heartbreak. Been at the spot where my heart was shattered. Tobias has stood beside me even after his awareness of my pregnancy with my Ex-boyfriend he never let me go. He took care of my boys like they were his. I presumed my heart had fallen for him but I won't let that happen. I have tightened my grips against love, I just want to make sure my grandfather's legacy doesn't crumble under my uncle.
“Tomorrow is Grandpa's birthday, I will be dropping by to pick you up and the kids,” his voice jolted me out of my thoughts.
“You shouldn't bother, I will have my chauffeur drive us.”
“No, I'm coming over,” He persisted, and I had to give in. My boys loved his company and will be delighted to have him around.
“Ok, see you tomorrow.”
I ended the call and glanced at my watch, I was late.
“Oh my!” I muttered and maneuvered my way out of the traffic light before being caught. Within a few minutes, my car rolled to a stop at the front of Jason's company, my grandfather's legacy. I quickly jumped down, grabbed my pink suitcase, and dashed into the company.
There wasn't any time to return
greetings, as the elevator took me to the floor of the company's boardroom. The second I stepped out of the elevator, Sydney my assistant was there to welcome me with a gloomy face.
“What's the problem, isn't the meeting holding anymore?” I inquired scrutinizing her uneasy demeanor.
“Ma, I'm sorry Uncle Mark moved the meeting early, without my knowledge. I just got to find out now,” she pleaded with her face down.
My mouth twitched in annoyance as I glared at her with my teeth gritted.
“What the hell! How dare he? '' I stormed to the boardroom but apparently, it was as silent as ever, clearly showing that the meeting with the new client was over a long time. Uncle Mark is stepping on my toes. He knows too well he can't have any meetings or award a contract to a new client without my approval. He has been a pain in my neck since Grandpa handed Jason’s company to the both of us since he wasn't fit to handle the company on his own. Being the only offspring of my Father who was the supposed heir if he was still alive, it is only right if I take over my Father's position, as clearly stated by my grandfather.
As I marched to his office, I was cursing fiercely in my mind, my eyes blazing with anger but a few steps to his office door, I was informed by his secretary that he left just after concluding the meetings. I beat my lips in annoyance
“I'm not going
g to approve this contract,” I mumbled to myself and dashed to my office.
It was my grandfather's birthday, Tobias's limousine pulled in front of my grandpa's magnificent mansion, and the doors were held open for us to alight by his private chauffeur. I came down first and moved aside for my two babies. They both came down too. Last was Tobias whose face was shimmering with a smile. Our hands linked, as we walked together into the ongoing party. Everyone stopped, and heads began to turn at our arrival. Most attention was on me and Tobias as he held my hands. Daniel and David on the sight of Grandpa in his wheelchair, sprinted to him and wrapped their little hands around him. He held them tightly, placing a kiss on their heads.“Happy birthday Grandpa,” they both chorus excitedly.“Thank you, my buddies,” he replied with a wide grin of amusement on his face.“Happy birthday Grandpa,” I hunkered down to his level and placed a kiss on his forehead. Since the day he set his eyes on me, he has rejuvenated back to his normal self apart from the fact that he was s
“I won't be able to head Jason’s company anymore and for that, I will officially appoint my granddaughter Avery as the new CEO.” his words resonate in my ear. I was thrilled that he believed in me to pass down this huge responsibility to me. The cheering from the guests boomed. I squatted down and placed a kiss on his forehead, whispering to his ear that I wouldn't disappoint him. Smiling at the guest, I made a strong promise to drive the company to a greater height, not wanting to let him down now. When I glanced at my uncle's direction, the look on his face was murderous before he zoomed out but I didn't fidget a bit. I noticed that Jeffery who stood beside him was no longer there.Coward, he couldn't even stand my gut. He might have thought I was still that lonely orphan with no identity. I smiled to myself waving at Tobias whose face was glinting in glee. The party was finally over and the whole mansion was silent as everyone reclined to their various rooms. You would never gues
Jeffery POVI got no response from him, he just grinned at me in the cutest manner. I stared at him perplexed, Whose child was this? I thought inwardly. He held his rumbling stomach pouting his lips as I stared at a face that was small and cute like a cherub from a medieval painting “I’m hungry" he looked at me with those gray eyes identical to mine as he whimpered as if in pain. His voice softened my heart and I moved closer to him, rubbing his back, as I couldn’t stand the pain he was going through.I looked down at my watch wondering if any restaurant would be open, it was a few minutes past ten pm, and none would be open at that time. “Don't worry I'll get you something to eat, we will be going to my house and I’ll tell the chef to make you a meal when we get there" I said to the little boy, he nodded his head in agreement, and wrapped his hand around my waist. I hesitate a bit before taking him into a warm embrace. I felt a spark in my heart as though I was holding a missin
Avery's POVMy hands couldn’t stop shaking as I paced around the room, my boy had been gone for three hours to God knows where. My heart was beating so loud I bet someone miles away could hear it. My face was red and blotchy from all the crying earlier. I clasped my hands together and muttered a prayer, at that point, it felt like a mantra.I had left my boys for just two hours and this happened. I couldn’t stop blaming myself, if only I had left them with a grown-up. I had felt the boys wouldn’t leave the room but how wrong I was. I felt like a terrible mother.I looked around the living room to where my grandfather and other workers were Seated, everyone was wearing a gloomy look on their faces. I checked for Tobias, but he hadn’t returned, he had gone out with the staff to look around the compound for Daniel. At that moment I was really grateful to him, I wouldn’t know what to do if I were alone, I was so overpowered by emotions that I didn’t know where to start. He was making
Avery POVI couldn’t believe my ears, what was Daniel saying, I thought to myself, as I tried to comprehend his words.“You saw your who?" I asked as I looked at Tobias Panicked, he looked tensed as well “I was with this nice uncle, I wished he was my daddy" he replied with a cheerful smile Everyone breathes a sigh of relief as the tension dissipates from the room. How would he have known who his father was? I made sure I kept that away from them.Relieved, I said, “Come on baby, let’s get you showered," I looked at everyone with an appreciative smile as I walked to my room with him.“Dani!!” David screams as he hugs his brother, it was so nice seeing my babies together again.I ran their bath and bathed David before DanielWhile bathing Daniel, I checked again for injuries or any sign of abuse, when I didn’t see any, I relaxed and continued bathing him.“Tell me more about this nice uncle baby," I asked him as I toweled his body“He's really tall, Mummy, and he looks like Batman, h
Jeffery's POVI looked at myself in the mirror, to make sure my hair was perfect, I adjusted my tie and checked my wristwatch, I had a few minutes left before I left for the office. I decided to have breakfast, I walked to the dining table to the meal Monica already prepared. As I sat down at the table, my mind wandered back to the little boy who had been here earlier, I couldn’t stop thinking about him. It felt as though I was missing my flesh and blood like he was my son.I couldn’t help but wonder how he was doing. I wished I knew who his parents were but it was probably for the best that I didn’t know. My phone rang and I sighed as soon as I saw the caller ID, it was Danielle. I picked up the call to her usual sweet voice.“Hey baby, how are you doing?” She asked“I’m good about leaving for the office,” I replied as I got up from the dining chair and walked straight to my car, I just lost my appetite. The Chauffeur opens the back door and I glide in.“Baby I was wondering if we
Avery's POV It had been a really stressful weekend, with what happened at my grandfather’s house and settling back into the house. I was as exhausted as I could get. I couldn’t stop thinking about Daniel's mystery uncle, that has been all he talked about. I wish I could meet him to see why Daniel was so entranced with him.On getting home, I had instructed their nannies to be with them at all times, since Daniel could leave on his own. I didn’t want a repeat of what happened during the weekend.I stepped out of the car and had to put my sunglasses on, to hide the dark circles under my eye. I got to my office floor and my Secretary Anna informed me about someone waiting for me in the office.“Who?” I asked her.“He said he’s an old friend, ma,” she said.“And you let this old friend into my office without knowing his identity, Anna," I asked her.“I’m sorry ma," she apologized, “it won’t happen again."I was skeptical about having a stranger in my office, especially someone who claim
Avery's POV My head was banging as I closed my laptop and packed it into my bag, it had been one hell of a day. I had been a nervous wreck throughout the entire day. Jeffery’s visit to my office had really destabilized me. I had lost focus more than once during a presentation and lost my temper with one of my staff. I would have to apologize to the poor girl, she had been so close to tears, I really had to leave before something worse happened. I called Anna on my way out. “I'll be leaving earlier than usual, I have a headache," I said to her as I entered the elevator. “Okay ma,” she replied, “bye."I got home to see Tobias with the kids and my heart was instantly full of euphoria. I smiled to myself and felt the tension leave my body a little. David was the first to see me and I wished I had a camera with me, I would have captured the moment his face lit up. It was really beautiful. “Mummy is back," he shouted as he left their little group and ran toward me. Daniel swung his hea
