CHAPTER 17

“Hey!” Kylo's voice boomed from the doorway.

“Let her be, get somewhere else,” he said, surprising me.

“But she could come over to yours, why mine?” I asked, my voice laced with frustration.

“It’s my house,” he replied simply, foreclosing the possibility of debate.

I had no more strength to argue. I packed my bag with a few necessary things for the next forty-eight hours and checked into another room. The other rooms in that house were usually empty, except when Grandpa Cassian came to visit and stayed in one of them.

I took a hot shower and lay on the strange bed, feeling sad. It was somewhere I thought was my sanctuary from all external agitation, but here too I couldn’t find peace.

I began thinking about Kylo and the woman who was sharing my room. Who was she? Why is she in my room? And why did Kylo seem so apathetic about it?

My mind rushed with millions of queries, but tonight I knew there would be no answers. I closed my eyes trying to black out all noises and chaos, but sleep
