Chapter nineteen

Katherine’s POV

I pressed my body so close to the wall, that I practically flattened myself against it. I stopped breathing unconsciously, anxiously waiting for Ethan's footsteps.

It was scarily quiet but I waited a couple more beats before I started up the stairs.

Unfortunately, I stepped on the creaky step that had a spring loose, the sound echoing loudly in the quiet space.

Immediately, Ethan's lumbering form came around the corner and I squealed, bolting up the remaining stairs.

I ran into the hallway, spying the door of our bedroom from here and I pumped my legs harder in a bid to get there on time.

"Katherine, wait!" Ethan bellowed behind me, his voice way too close for comfort.

I ignored him of course and continued running, which fueled me to go further.

Distantly, I wondered if the people around weren't woken up by all the commotion, because I was confused as to why no one was coming to help me.

Then again...I'm not sure they'd dare to intervene.
