Chapter forty-four

Caleb’s POV

"Fuck…what happened?" I breathed out, my gaze coasting over every inch that I could see. Each destroyed building, each dead body inside felt like a spike through my heart as it was a certain reminder that I had failed my people.

Once again…

"After you uh…" he looked away, attempting to find the words. "After what happened to you, they raided the place before they left and there wasn't much, we could do. They outpowered us, two to one." He explains quietly and I see his shoulders droop, knowing he was taking the full blame for everything.

"Did they take anyone?" I waited with bated breath for the answer, already having an idea what it would be.

Nevertheless, that didn't make it any less painful. "Yeah. Some women and children."

I couldn't breathe. "Holy…" The crushing weight of responsibilities was on my shoulders, and it felt as if they were weighing me down, not letting me up for air. Then I remembered the wise words of my father and what he advised me to do in situations
