" What about my Lilly?" Alexander asked dropping the papers in his hands, giving me his full attention.
The boldness I had gathered to knock on the door suddenly disappeared as he stared at me.
" Well... Er..." I stammered.
" If you don't have anything reasonable to say, leave". Alexander resumed his gaze at the large paperwork in front of me.
How should I begin?
Should I... I glanced up at Alexander who was behaving like I was no longer in his study.
I was already here, let's just get this done and over with.
" Do you know what's going on with her?" I asked after a few moments.
Alexander hands scribbling something on a paper froze, then he looked up at me.
" What do you mean? "
" Lilly came back home today in tears. Well she wasn't exactly in crying, but I could tell she had cried. Her eyes were red and puffy and her voice hoarse. This isn't the first time this has happened, I noticed it for a few days now. "
Now Alexander's attention was fully on me. He had dropped the pen in his hands and was concentrated solely on me.
" Explain more".
I sighed loudly, shrugging my shoulders.
" Well, for the past three days I've noticed that Lilly comes home a bit later than normal, her eyes always red and puffy like someone who had just cried. But today it was way obvious because I caught her". I explained.
I could see the worry in Alexander's eyes as he let out a loud sigh.
" Do you know what happened?" He asked me.
I immediately glared at him.
"If I knew would I ask you..." I quickly clapped my mouth with my hands to shut them.
Damnit, it just slipped out.
I really need to control my temper.
Alexander gaze at me turned cold.
" Why did you just say?" He raised a brow asking me coldly.
"Nothing... I mean, I don't know. It's best you talk to her " I bowed my face down to prevent him from seeing the embarrassment on my face.
Alexander stood up and walked to the floor to length window by the side of the office and looked out through it.
" I don't know how to talk to Lilly". I heard him say. It sounded like a whisper but I was still able to grasp it.
How can he not know how to talk to his daughter? Just talk to her.
" Alex... I mean Mr Alexander, I think you should find out what is happening with her, because I don't think its a trivial issue" I answered my head still looking down.
The office went silent. There was no sound apart from the noisy sounds of some insects of the night.
Is he not going to say anything?
I waited few more minutes but Alexander didn't say anything else.
" I'll just leave". I backed away slowly. I was just about to turn the door knob when I heard him speak.
Did he just speak to me?
His voice was too low that I was unable to grasp anything he said.
" What did you say? " I turned back to him asking.
" I said I have a new job for you". He removed his gaze from the window and places it back at me.
"Excuse me?" I asked in confusion.
" I want to watch Lilly closely. I want you to find out what is it that is disturbing her".
"Mr Alexander..."
I shook my head in disagreement.
" You can do that, you should do that. You're her father. I'm just her nanny".
" I want you to be more that just a nanny to her. I want you to her friend, a close confidant to her, one that she can tell all her troubles to". Alexander added looking at me.
I stared at him in disbelief.
" What makes you think I can do that? I'm not good with children, you would have noticed that if you have seen me try to take care of Lilly... " I shouted out of annoyance.
My temper was slowly getting the grip on me, I could feel, but I was way to angry to care. My frustration from this morning was coming back to me, everything just adding up made me just want to scream.
" That's the problem. I've to work all the time, that's the reason I can't give Lilly the attention she wants. " He shouted a me.
" The just stop working.... You're the boss, you can give yourself a break to be with your daughter ". I shouted back.
Alexander smiled sadly walking towards the couch. He sat down on it stared at me.
" I love Lilly. I really do. But I can't always be there for her".
I saw the pain in his eyes and my anger vanished, it was replaced with sympathy for him.
" Then get yourself a wife". I said calmly this time.
He snorted.
" I can never love another woman apart from Lilly's mother. She was... The most beautiful woman in the world".
I walked towards him slowly, taking a seat on the couch next to him.
" What happened to her? " I asked slowly.
" She died. Few months after giving birth to Lilly. I don't know how to love Lilly the way a mother would, and I tried to get her good caretakers, but they always had another motive. " Then he looked up at me.
" All I want is someone she can relate well with". I shut my eyes as I thought of his words.
" Plus... If you can do this, I'll relief you of all your debts and you'll be free". He added.
My eyes widened at his statement.
Did he really mean that? Was I really going to be free?
" I'll do it". I nodded at last.
Alexander had helped me alot, from buying me away from that stupid slaughter house to bringing me to his house when even my parents didn't want me, the least I could do was to fix his relationship with his daughter and I regain my freedom.
" Thank you".
My heart fluttered when he said those words.
Why was he thanking me, I'm yet to do anything!
Heat rose up to my cheeks. And a smile grew on my lips.
Why the heck am I smiling.
I stood up from the couch like I was shocked with lighting.
"I'll...em... I'll be going back to my room now". I was just about step out when my stomach grumbled.
This time around my face turned hot with embarrassment.
Why now for Christ sake!
" Are you hungry?" He asked me standing up from the couch and walking towards me.
" Oh... No" I shook my head fiercely.
Why was he coming so close to me...
I step back as he kept coming forward.
" You know what? "
"What?"
" Starting from tomorrow you'll be joining us on the table".
" What? " I asked in disbelief.
" I said, you'll be eating with us, my daughter and I, of just my daughter when she's the only one around ".
" Em... That would be... Er... Thank you".
Why was he so nice to me?
" Thank you... I be leaving ". I rushed outside the door before my stomach would make another sound.
I couldn't complete my mission of getting food from tbe kitchen again, I raced to my room, my heart beating widely in my chest.
" God... What just happened ". I held my chest with my hands.
I stared at Lilly's door for minutes without moving. Today was a Saturday, and would be the best time for me to get to know Mia like Alexander suggested. But... What the hell am I going to say to the girl? Alexander was out... Went to work on a Saturday, a sign of a typical work addict, so Lilly was in her room all by herself. Ok, I'm doing this. I stretched my hands and opened the door ever so slightly. Lilly was seated on the floor, concentrating on something so intensely. " What are you doing?" I peeped into Lilly's room from the slightly ajar door. The little witch looked up at me from her position, before she looked away. " What are you doing here? I didn't call for you"Yeah you didn't. Alright Mia, you're already here, so let's do this. I opened the door completely and walked into the room. " I just thought, you know... to check up on you, see how you're doing ". Mia shrugged her shoulders before continuing what she was doing. Walking closer to her, I looked down at
Third person POV. It's been weeks since Lilly and Mia became friends. Lilly began warming up to her slowly, and Mia began liking the little girl's company. The girl friendship with her came with a lot of benefits, one of them being that Mia no longer lacked food. No matter the hate the other servants in the house feel for her, they couldn't do anything, especially when Lilly backed her up. Alexander on the other hand, was always at work. He was yet to see the new friendship formed my his daughter and Lilly... But someone else had already noticed. " So... You and the 'little witch' are on good terms now?" Alice asked air coating the little witch. She had noticed that Mia no longer complained about her as often as she normally did. " Well... " Mia shrugged. The girl was good company, and could be really fun to be with, but there was no way she's admitting liking her. It would hurt her pride way too much. " We just came to an even ground". Alice raised her brow at Mia. She didn'
Mia stared at Victoria refusing to back down, Alice in the other hand had begun saying her prayers. She knew the kind of person Victoria was, it would be a miracle if both of them didn't get sacked today. " Not only do you dare to stop me from correcting my staff, you also talked back at me. Who in the hell do you think you are?" Victoria yelled, her face crunched in anger and her chest moving up and down quickly. She was shocked at the audacity of the new maid. No one, not even her brother had ever talked to her this way before in her life!" Who I am doesn't matter. Just because we work for your brother doesn't mean you can speak to us or even hit us any how you please". Mia said calmly, secretly enjoying how riled up Victoria was getting. Alice on the other hand was having a heart attack. Mia was making things worse for them, why was she not seeing it. " What is going on here?" Lilly walked in on the situation, her footsteps slowed down when she saw her aunt. " Aunt Victoria..
Mia's POVI left the room after putting Lilly to bed her for afternoon nap. This was the most serious I've seen Lilly ever since we became friends. Everyone was so scared of this Victoria, when all she needs is a good beating... And I could do it for her. She just sounded like a spoilt brat who had gotten everything she ever wanted in her life in her life making her do rude to everyone else. Damn that girl, she's making my head hurt. I felt a tapping on my shoulders, more like a shaking. I immediately looked up to see Alice who was standing above me worriedly. " Mia!" She yelled. She was way too loud. "What, what?" I murmured cleaning my ears which I suspect would've been damaged with how loud Alice yelled in it. " What on earth are you thinking about? I've been calling your name for about five minutes now!" Five minutes?Could Victoria matter really have taken me that far?" I was just... Er..." I fumbled trying to find an excuse. If I told Alice that I was starting to get
" There you are, Mia come here". Alexander gestured to me with his hands.I gave Alice a comforting smile so she could release her hands which were round about my waist helping me walk." Leave us!" Alexander ordered Alice. She nodded, giving me a smile that said ' you can do this ' before leaving Alexander, Victoria and I in the room, together... With my ulcer acting up more than it had ever done in my life..I walked over slowly, trying my best to hide my discomfort as I walked." There she is... That vicious woman. She almost hit me brother". Victoria began her complains to Alexander pointing at me." I heard you and I'm going to ask her about it now". " You don't understand. Why would a maid want to raise her hand on me, Alex... Unless she's not a maid... " She left her the rest of her sentence making my eyes widened. Did she think that Alexander and I were..." No... How can you think that? Mia is just my daughter's nanny". Alexander swiftly denied. Why did that pain me so
Mia's POV I was never one to cry at emotional matters like this, but why was his words hurting this much. " You owe me your life, you know that right? Then why do you go rat your mouth insulting my sister! "" Victoria made most of those things up I would never... " My back touched the wall. There was no where else I could run to. " Are you calling my sister a liar now?" He asked now just a few steps away from me. I could feel my heart beat racing, my fear level rising. What is he going to do?He was so dangerously close to me right now, could it be that he changed his mind and decided to use me like the sex toy he bought me for?The thought made me panic even more. "Mr Hamilton I...argh!" I yelled in pain. My stomach pain I increased to the point I just had to shout. Before I knew it, my body went limp and I went the next thing I saw was darkness. I struggled to open my eyes, but immediately close it due to light. "It's bright". I murmured before trying to get off the bed.
Mia's POV Alexander stared at me in surprise... His eyes looked like he was guilty of doing something. Why did he look so guilty? What did he do?" Why happened? " I asked him sitting up straight." I had no idea my sister did that...""That's because you didn't allow me to speak before going all brozilla on me". I interrupted. Not now Mia... My consciousness warned, but my anger towards him had gone I've over limit, and now that he was apologizing I couldn't stop myself from getting annoyed. " I know you love your sister, but you could've at least heard me out... Even your daughter vouched for me. Lilly believed me, something I thought could never happen, but you..."I began to remember everything he said to me yesterday, my eyes starting to get blurry. No Mia... You can't cry. Not now... Not in front of him. " I understand. But Victoria really lies, and she is my sister..." He said in a low voice. I scoffed. So this man was too proud to apologize... Okay then. "This is not ev
Alexander's POVI rushed to my room the moment I left Mia's side. What is wrong with me? I asked myself. I was the one who told Amelia that I was dating Mia, but why?Why was she always in my head?I sat on my bed combing my hair roughly with my hands. It was indeed a mistake to tell my Amelia that I was dating Mia. Why didn't I just tell her the truth? There was nothing to it. "Dargh..."Why did I allow Mia to get so close to my family like this? She reminded me so much of my late wife, so so much of her. That was the reason I bought her in the first place. My grandfather had forced me to go to the auction that day. He threatened to take away the company I worked so hard for and give to his half brother Gregory Hart who had been exiled from the Hamilton family long time ago. I had stared at the stupid invitation for three stupid hours before I agreed to go.I promised myself I was only going to watch and leave when if was done and for the first few ladies I did. Countless wo
